Differences Between D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET

The document compares and contrasts D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET. It explains that D-MOSFET allows current to flow between the drain and source by default, while E-MOSFET does not allow current until a positive voltage is applied to the gate. The document also lists the steps to check an enhancement type MOSFET, which involves using a multimeter in diode testing mode to check for continuity between the drain and source with and without a positive voltage applied to the gate.

1) Illustrate the difference of the D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET and explain

comprehensively.
E-MOSFET D-MOSFET
(schematic symbol) (schematic symbol)

 The difference between D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET is on their function,

construction and definition.

 D-MOSFET is a type transistor wherein the gate terminal is electrically

insulated from the current carrying channel and that is the so called as

“Insulated Gate FET”. D-MOSFET has three terminals which is the drain,

gate and source.

 So as you can see on the picture from what I’ve drawn, there is connection

between the drain and the source meaning there is current running through

it. So in able to switch it off that current running through it, we need to

apply a positive voltage from gate to source so that our substrate will

attract the gate or in able to create another P type or substrate that is

connected to the gate. That is the reason why it was so called Depletion

MOSFET because it depletes or restricts the connection between drain to

source.

 On the other hand E-MOSFET can be classed as normally off or non-

conducting device, and it will only conduct current if we apply positive

voltage from gate to source,

 E-MOSFET has also three terminals which are the drain, gate and source.

So as you can see on the picture there is no connection between drain to

source so meaning there is no current flowing through it. So in able to

switch it on or in able to conduct current between them, we need to apply

a positive voltage from gate to source, in able to create a connection

between drain to source.

 The positive voltage extract or decreases the substrate or P-type that is the

reason why it was so called Enhancement MOSFET because it enhance

the connection between drain to source in able to conduct current between

them or in able to have a current running through it.

2) List down the process on how to check the enhancement type MOSFET.

 ON STATE

a) Set the multimeter to diode testing mode.

b) Discharge the MOSFET using your bare thumb, touching the three

terminals which are the drain, gate and the source.

c) So we can now check the drain to source, if there is a current

running through it.

d) Red probe will be on the drain while the black probe will be on the

source.

e) After putting the red probe and black probe to their respective

terminals, observe the multimeter if it deflect or not or there is

continuity or does not have.

f) There should not have continuity, so that we can exactly say that

the MOSFET is on good condition.

g) In able to have a perfect conclusion, if the MOSFET is on good

condition. We need to put positive voltage on the gate while

negative on the source.

h) Then observe again the multimeter, if the multimeter deflect or

there is value through it meaning the MOSFET is on good

condition because there is already continuity within THE

MOSFET.
