LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

ABM 11 EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGIES (Q1-WK1)
Information and Communications Technology

I. Introduction

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have made an important

contribution to social and economic progress, such as higher jobs and
efficiency, increasing access to better living standards. The term
Information and Communication Technology collectively refers to the
technologies, both software and hardware, that enable humans to
communicate with one another.

This Learning Activity Sheets will help you compare different online
platforms and how to use them properly. Enjoy learning!

II. Learning Competency

This Learning Activity Sheets was designed and written with you in mind. It
is here to help you compare and contrast the nuances of varied online
platforms, sites, and content to best achieve specific class objectives or
address situational challenges. (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-Ia-b1).

III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. explain the current state of ICT Technologies;

2. distinguish the correct web platform to promote social change;
3. display a positive attitude towards ICT Technologies; and

1
4. display with utmost concern on social responsibility.

IV. Discussion

Information, Communications and Technology Today

We use the Internet when we make a video call. We use cellular networks
when we send a text or make a call. We use payphones or use a telephone
network when we run out of power or battery. One of the purposes of ICT is
to provide a single way of communicating.

In economic terms, ICT has saved companies a lot of resources (time and
money) with the kind of communication technology they use today. In a
similar way, we spend less on ICT. Since it usually costs us a peso to send a
text message or an SMS to the internet, we can send multiple messages and
only a fraction of them will be charged.

The current composition of the ICT network is the fusion of the hardware
equipment, accurate software, GUI and an effective communication network.

World Wide Web

The World Wide Web (WWW) is the system that enables you to access
hypertext documents and other files over the internet. The technology was
proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.

Evolution of the World Wide Web

Web 1.0: Static Web Pages

 When the World Wide Web was invented, most web pages were static.
 Static (also known as flat page or stationary page) in the sense that the
page is “as is” and cannot be manipulated by the user.
 This is referred to as Web 1.0.

Web 2.0: Dynamic Web Pages

Web 2.0 is a term coined by Darcy DiNucci in January 1999. In her post,
“Fragmented Future,” she wrote:

2
“The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially
static screenfuls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first glimmerings
of 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just starting to see how that
embryo might develop.”

 Web 2.0 is the evolution of Web 1.0 by adding dynamic web pages.
 Web 2.0 allows users to interact with the page: instead of just reading a
page, the user may be able to comment or create a user account.
 Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video
sharing sites, and web applications.

Key Features of Web 2.0

It enables users to categorize and classify/arrange
1. Folksonomy information using freely chosen terms (e.g., tagging / hash
tagging).
2. Rich User Content is dynamic and is sensitive to the feedback of the
Experience user.
Services are delivered on request rather than on a one-
3. Long Tail
time transaction.
4. User The owner of the website is not the only one who is able to
Participation publish material.
5. Software as a Users can switch to the application only when they need
Service it, rather than buying them.
6. Mass It is a dynamic exchange of knowledge through universal
Participation web access.

Web 3.0

 The Semantic Web is a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) project. The
W3C standard encourages web developers to include semantic content on
their web pages.
 The aim of Web 3.0 is to make machines (or servers) understand the
user’s needs and be able to deliver user-specific web content in a fast-
paced manner.

Problems of Web 3.0

HTML files and existing web browsers will not be
1. Compatibility
supported by Web 3.0.
The protection of the consumer is also at issue as the
2. Security
computer stores its preferences.
3. Vastness The World Wide Web now includes billions of websites.
Some definitions are imprecise. It will rely on the words
4. Vagueness
“old” and “new” would depend on the user

3
Given that machines use logic, a computer has some
5. Logic limitations capable of anticipating what the consumer
relates to at any given time.

Trends in ICT

As the ICT world continues to emerge, the industry has concentrated on a

variety of developments. These technologies address people’s needs that
benefit most from ICT. Both for business or personal use, the new front
runners in ICT innovation are those patterns.

1. Convergence

Technological convergence is the integration between technological

innovations to work towards an objective or mission similar to that.

For example, besides using your personal computer to create word

documents, you can now use your smartphone.

2. Social Media

Social media is a website, application, or online

platforms allowing web users to create, co-create,
debate, alter, and share user-generated content.

Mobile technologies have drastically transformed the ICT landscape by increasing accessibility and connectivity through advanced mobile networks like 4G and 5G . These networks provide high-speed data transfer, enhancing functionalities on smartphones and tablets that rival traditional PCs, such as high-definition video calls and fast internet browsing . Moreover, 5G's increased bandwidth and reduced latency expand possibilities for IoT applications, virtual reality, and more efficient online services, thereby transforming both individual user experiences and professional operations . These advancements emphasize the continuing relevance and growth potential of mobile technologies in the ICT sector .

Web 1.0 refers to the earliest stage of the World Wide Web characterized by static web pages. These pages were 'as is' and did not allow user interaction . Web 2.0 introduced dynamic web pages that facilitated user interaction, allowing users to comment, create accounts, and participate in content creation through social networking sites, blogs, and web applications . Key features of Web 2.0 include folksonomy, rich user experience, long tail, user participation, software as a service, and mass participation . Web 3.0, also known as the Semantic Web, aims to make the web more intelligent by enabling machines to understand users' needs and deliver customized content. However, Web 3.0 faces challenges such as compatibility, security, vastness, vagueness, and logic .

Social media plays a critical role in fostering social change by providing platforms for communication, interaction, and advocacy. It allows users to create, debate, and share content that can raise awareness and influence public opinion . To choose the right platform for advocacy, one must consider the target audience, the type of content being shared, and the platform's features. For broader audience engagement, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are effective due to their mass participation features. If the goal is to share in-depth information or foster discussions, blogging sites may be more suitable. Understanding these nuances helps choose the appropriate platform for specific advocacy efforts .

The development of assistive media is significant because it enhances inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with visual and reading impairments by providing audio recordings and other assistive functionalities . It allows for greater participation and access to information for those who might otherwise be marginalized. Challenges faced by assistive media include ensuring compatibility with various devices and platforms, securing adequate funding for continued development, and maintaining user privacy and data security . Overcoming these challenges is essential to improve and expand assistive media offerings, ensuring they reach and effectively serve all users in need .

Businesses can leverage Web 2.0 features, such as dynamic web pages and social media integration, to enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement. Dynamic content allows businesses to offer personalized user experiences, improving customer satisfaction and retention . Features like folksonomy enable businesses to better understand customer preferences through user-generated tags, enhancing product recommendation systems . Social media platforms facilitate direct communication with customers, providing insights into consumer behavior and trends, which can inform marketing strategies and product development. Additionally, utilizing Software as a Service (SaaS) reduces IT infrastructure costs and enhances flexibility in operational processes . Together, these strategies can significantly bolster a business's adaptability and competitive edge .

Web 3.0's focus on semantic understanding and user-specific content delivery could significantly influence future ICT developments by promoting the creation of more intelligent, responsive systems tailored to individual user needs . This evolution could lead to enhanced user experiences and productivity as systems anticipate and efficiently meet user demands. However, it also poses challenges such as ensuring compatibility with existing web infrastructure, addressing privacy concerns due to extensive data usage, and overcoming the limitations of machine logic in understanding nuanced user needs . The development of these intelligent systems may also drive advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning within ICT .

Web 2.0 is distinguished from Web 1.0 by its dynamic web pages and features that promote interaction and user participation. Key features include folksonomy, which enables tagging and classification of information, rich user experiences that respond to user feedback, service provision based on demand (long tail), and mass participation allowing collective knowledge exchange . These enhancements benefit users by making web interactions more engaging and personalized, fostering a sense of community, enabling easier content creation and sharing, and providing software applications as services that reduce the need for local installations .

Technological convergence integrates different technological innovations to achieve similar objectives, impacting both personal and professional environments. It allows devices such as smartphones to perform functions traditionally carried out by personal computers, enhancing flexibility and efficiency in tasks like document creation, which can now be performed on mobile devices . This convergence not only enhances personal productivity by providing anytime, anywhere access to digital tools but also improves professional environments by streamlining communication, collaboration, and operational processes. It also potentially reduces costs by minimizing the need for multiple devices, as a single device can handle diverse functions .

Trends like folksonomy and user participation enhance collective knowledge by enabling users to classify content with tags and contribute to information pools. Unlike traditional taxonomy systems, folksonomy leverages user-generated tags, providing a more flexible, community-driven classification method . User participation facilitates the democratic creation and dissemination of content, fostering collaborative learning and resource sharing. This approach supports more accurate, up-to-date information dissemination and allows for the rapid evolution of content organization reflective of current trends and user interests . The resultant dynamic knowledge base greatly aids in problem-solving and innovation .

The Semantic Web faces challenges like compatibility with existing HTML and web browsers, security concerns regarding personal data, and the vastness of the web's content . Achieving widespread adoption requires addressing these issues through the development of standards-compliant browsers and platforms that support Web 3.0 technologies. Enhancing data security and privacy frameworks can mitigate user concerns about data exposure . Additionally, using scalable, modular architectures can better manage vast datasets, while advancements in artificial intelligence could improve the precision of semantic content interpretation . Collaboration among industry standards bodies, developers, and stakeholders is crucial to overcoming these barriers and facilitating Web 3.0's adoption .
