Hydrostatic Pressure Calculations Guide

This document contains instructions for answering 6 questions related to hydrostatic pressure, forces on submerged objects, flow through gates and dams. The first question asks to determine the magnitude and location of hydrostatic pressure on a triangular gate submerged in oil. The second asks to calculate hydrostatic force and its location on rectangular, triangular and circular objects submerged at an angle. The third asks to calculate the mass of a weight needed for a gate to open at a certain water height. The remaining questions ask about tension in cables supporting a semicircular water trough, pressure on soil under a concrete dam, and the factor of safety against overturning for a dam with varying uplift pressure.

General Instructions: Answer the following questions based on our previous

topics.

1. A vertical triangular gate with the top base horizontal and 1.5 m wide is 3
m high. It is submerged in oil having sp. gr. of 0.82 with its top base
submerged to the depth of 2 m. Determine the magnitude and location of
the total hydrostatic pressure (measured from the cg) acting on the one
side of the gate.

2. An object is submerged in water with an angle of 35 degrees from the

bottom. The distance from the water surface to the top of the object is 5m.
Compute the Hydrostatic Force on the one side of the object and its
location from its bottom when an object is:

a. Rectangular: 3m wide by 6m high

b. Triangular: 4.5m wide by 5.2m high
c. Circular: 3.5m radius

3. The flow of water from a

reservoir is controlled by a
5-ft wide L-shaped gate
hinged at point A, as
shown in figure. If it is
desired that the gate open
when the water height is
12-ft, determine the mass
of the required weight W.

4. A water through a semicircular

cross section of radius 0.6m consists of
two symmetric parts hinged to each
other at the bottom as shown in
figure. The two parts are held
together by a cable and turnbuckle
placed every 3m along the length of
the trough. Calculate the tension in
each cable when the trough is filled
to the rim.

5. The concrete dam shown weighs 23.65 KN/m3 . Calculate the minimum and
maximum pressure on the soil where the dam rests and Factor of Safety
against Sliding and Overturning. When the coefficient of static friction is
0.43. The intensity of the hydrostatic Uplift varies from 25% full hydrostatic
pressure at heel and zero at toe.

6. Water backs up behind a concrete dam as shown in figure. Leakage under

the foundation gives a pressure distribution under the dam as indicated. If
the water depth, h, is too great, the dam will topple over about its toe (point
A). For the dimensions given, determine the facto of safety against
overturning moment if L= 120 ft and h = 50 ft. Base your analysis on a unit
length of the dam. The specific weight of concrete is 150 lb/𝑓𝑡 3 .
