Sodium Thiosulphate Standardization Guide

This document provides the procedure for preparing and standardizing a 0.1M sodium thiosulfate solution. It details the purpose, instrumentation, reagents, and step-by-step procedure for preparation by dissolving sodium thiosulfate and sodium carbonate in water, and for standardization by titrating the solution against a standard potassium bromate solution with starch indicator. The calculation for determining the molarity of the sodium thiosulfate solution based on the titration results is also included.

3.2 Sodium carbonate AR grade
3.3 Potassium bromate AR grade
3.4 Potassium iodide AR grade
3.5 2M hydrochloric acid
3.6 Starch solution

4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Preparation:
4.1.1 Dissolve 25.0 g of sodium Thiosulphate and 0.2 grams of Sodium carbonate in Carbon dioxide
free water and dilute to 1000 ml with the same solvent.
4.2 Standardization:
4.2.1 Weigh accurately about 0.2 gram of Potassium bromate previously dried to constant weight at
180°C, in sufficient water to produce 250 ml.
4.2.2 To 50ml of this solution add 2 grams of Potassium iodide and 3 ml of 2M hydrochloric acid
and titrate with the 0.1M sodium thiosulphate solution using starch solution, added towards the
end of the titration as indicator until the blue colour is discharged.
