1.0 General

This specification is intended to cover general as well as technical

specification required for design of Structural work required for OTS and
Canopy to the Owner.

2.0 Codes and Standards

Following is a general listing of Codes and Standards to be used in the design

National Building Code of India.

IS-875 : Code of practice for Structural safety of buildings
- loading standards.
IS-800 : Code of practice for general construction in steel.

3.0 Strucutal Materials

Structural steel shall conform to Grade B of IS: 2062 for rolled steel
members or plates up to 20 mm thickness.
Structural hollow sections (square & rectangular) conforming to IS:4923.
All structural steel plates and sections shall be of Main producer such as
“SAIL” or “TATA STEEL” or “RINL” or “JINDAL” make or vendor approved
by owner.

4.0 Design of Steel Structures

4.1 Loads :

All structures thereof shall conform to the latest revision of relevant Indian
Standard specifications and also to the various other technical
[Link] structures shall be designed for most critical
combinations of dead load, live load, wind loads and seismic loads, as
applicable as per requirement of relevant codes and standard.

A. Dead Load
(IS 875 part-1: 1987)
Dead load includes self weight of all the structural and achitectural
[Link] following unit weight of material shall be considered for
computation of loads.

Materials Unit Weight

Metal Roof Sheet 0.1 kN/m²

B. Live Load
(IS 875 part-2: 1987)
As per IS 875, part-2 the live loads on inaccessible roof is 0.75kN/m² and
0.02kN/m² to be reduced for every degree increase in slope over 10°.

C. Wind Load

Common questions

The roof slope significantly impacts live load design for Vidiyal Residency. According to IS 875 part-2, the live load on an inaccessible roof starts at 0.75 kN/m² and reduces by 0.02 kN/m² for each degree increase in slope over 10°. Therefore, for the roof with a 24° slope, the live load is further reduced, accounting for the diminished likelihood of accumulation due to gravitational effects, ensuring an efficient and safety-compliant design .

Load combinations are essential in the structural design of Vidiyal Residency as they help ensure that the building can handle various types of loadings simultaneously under real-world conditions. Using combinations like DL+LL (Dead Load + Live Load), DL+LL+WL/EQ (Dead Load + Live Load + Wind Load/Earthquake Load), and DL+WL/EQ, the design accounts for possible maximum stress scenarios, thus ensuring structural safety and compliance with IS 800:2007 standards .

STAAD Pro Software is used for the structural analysis of Vidiyal Residency because it allows for a comprehensive three-dimensional space frame analysis. This tool is capable of handling complex models and simulating different load conditions, making it ideal for evaluating various structural behaviors under multiple loading scenarios, thereby ensuring a design that adheres to the IS codes such as IS 800:2007 for steel strength design .

Wind loads for the canopy design at Vidiyal Residency are calculated using IS 875 part-3, 2015, considering a basic wind speed of 47 m/s. The factors influencing these calculations include the risk coefficient (k1), height factor (k2), and topography factor (k3), all set at 1 except the height factor which is 1.17. Additionally, the importance factor for a cyclonic region (k4) and wind direction factor (Kd) are considered, with Kd being 0.9. These factors are crucial as they adjust the wind load design to account for specific site conditions and structural importance .

The dead load of roof sheets is calculated at 0.1 kN/m² in accordance with IS 875 part-1: 1987, reflecting the material weight and dimensions commonly used in the design. This load is a fundamental factor because it contributes to the total vertical load carried by the structure and directly influences foundation design, supporting member sizes, and overall stability .

Considerations for wind load directionality and pressure involve the use of force coefficients (Cp) for both windward and leeward sides based on IS 875 part-3 standards. These coefficients vary with directionality, noted as Wind-X and Wind-Z in the documentation. Factors like the height of the building, topography, and wind exposure impact the wind pressure distribution, ensuring the design's resilience against varying directional pressures .

In the seismic design for Vidiyal Residency, the importance factor (set at 1.0) and response reduction factor (set at 3.0) influence the level of seismic forces the structure is designed to withstand. The importance factor reflects the building's role and occupancy, ensuring safety priorities are met, while the response reduction factor quantifies the expected reduction in seismic forces due to the building's ability to absorb and dissipate energy through inelastic behavior .

Selecting structural steel Grade B of IS: 2062 for the building project implies using steel that has specified mechanical properties suitable for structural applications, typically yielding a good balance of strength and ductility. This choice affects the overall load-bearing capacity and resilience of the structure. Grade B steel ensures conformity with standard requirements for rolled steel members or plates up to a specified thickness, contributing to the structural integrity and safety .

The primary codes and standards referenced in the design of Vidiyal Residency Private Limited include the National Building Code of India, IS-875 (Code of practice for structural safety of buildings - loading standards), and IS-800 (Code of practice for general construction in steel). These codes are significant as they provide the guidelines to ensure the safety, reliability, and durability of the structure by considering various loads such as dead, live, wind, and seismic loads .

The design accounts for seismic activities by following the recommendations of IS:1893-2016. The site is located in Zone-III, which necessitates designing the structure to resist seismic forces with an importance factor of 1.0 and a response reduction factor of 3.0. The soft soil strata are considered, and despite the building's weight relative to the supporting structure being less than 5%, the weight is still considered in the design to ensure comprehensive seismic resistance .
