Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was one of the nine famous Muslim astronomers who lived from 908 to 986 AD. He was born in Iran and worked at the court of Emir 'Adud al-Dawla in Isfahan, Persia. Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was one of the nine famous Muslim
astronomers. He was born on December 7th, 908 AD,In Iran, and
he lived at the court of Emir 'Adud al-Dawla in Isfahan, Persia.
Al-Sufi worked on translating and expanding Greek astronomical
works, especially « the Almagest of Ptolemy ».He was a major
contributor to the translation into Arabic of the astronomy books
that were being kept in Alexandria, Egypt. He was the first to
attempt to relate the Greek with the traditional Arabic star names
and constellations, which were very complicated to other scholars.
He also made the earliest recorded observation of the Andromeda
Galaxy in 964, describing it as a « small cloud » which was the first
galaxy other than the Milky Way to be mentioned in writing.
Al – Sufi Died on May 25th, 986 In Isfahan, and in his honor The
lunar crater Azophi and the minor planet 12621 Alsufi were both
named after him.
