Simple Linear Regression Tutorial

This document contains two questions about simple linear regression analysis. Question 1 involves temperature and proportion of impurities data and asks to: draw a scatter plot; determine the regression line using least squares; and determine if proportion of impurities increases as temperature approaches -273 degrees Celsius. Question 2 involves left and right foot temperature measurements for 18 diabetic patients. It asks to: draw a scatter plot; determine the regression line; and predict the right foot temperature for a patient with a left foot temperature of 81 degrees.

Tutorial Week 11: Simple Linear Regression

Q1
Q2 A regression model is desired relating temperature and the proportion of impurities passing
through solid helium. Temperature is listed in degrees centigrade. The data are shown in
Table Q1.

Table Q1: Proportion of impurities at various temperature

Temperature, Proportion of
(◦C), x Impurities, y

−260.5 0.425
−255.7 0.224
−264.6 0.453
−265.0 0.475
−270.0 0.705
−272.0 0.860
−272.5 0.935
−272.6 0.961
−272.8 0.979
−272.9 0.990

(a) Draw the scatter plot for the variables

(b) Determine the regression line using the least squares method
(c) Does it appear that the proportion of impurities passing through helium increases as
the temperature approaches −273 degrees centigrade?
Q3 Foot ulcers are common problem for people with diabetes. Higher skin temperatures on
the foot indicate an increased risk of ulcers. The article “An Intelligent Insole for
Diabetic Patients with the Loss of Protective Sensation” (Kimberly Anderson, M.S.
Thesis, Colorado School of Mines), reports measurements of temperatures, in °𝐹, of
both feet for 18 diabetic patients. The results are presented in the Table Q1.

left foot Vs right foot for 18 diabetic patients

Left Foot Right Foot Left Foot Right Foot

80 80 76 81
85 85 89 86
75 80 87 82

87 82 87 82
78 78 86 85
88 89 76 80
89 90 88 89

(a) Draw the scatter plot for the variables

(b) Determine the regression line using the least squares method
(c) Predict the right foot temperature for a patient whose left foot temperature is 81 degrees.
