Lesson 24b cont.

Sound alikes: -idge and -age

Only nine words end in i-d-g-e. They all contain the word ridge except for
the last two: bridge, cartridge, fridge, partridge, porridge, ridge, midge,
midget. There are, however, many a-g-e words. Longer a-g-e and all i-d-g-e
words are pronounced ‘ige’. Since bridge is the only frequently used word
ending in -idge, a rough generalisation for all other ‘ige’ words is: unless the
word is bridge, spell it a-g-e.

Double consonants before seven -age words

Strangely, there are seven words in which the short vowels before -age need
protecting. They can be learned in these two sentences:
I saw his luggage in the Baggage Room passage,
so I left him this message.
Come and eat cabbage at our cottage in the village.
