Overview of US Refugee Admissions Program

The United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) involves refugees being referred from overseas in one of three categories: referral by the UNHCR or NGOs; membership in special humanitarian groups; or family reunification with a relative in the US. The refugee then goes through security screening by the Department of State, USCIS, and other agencies. If approved, they receive cultural orientation and a medical exam, then travel to the US is arranged by IOM where they are resettled through a domestic agency providing initial assistance.
