LAVENDER (Lavandula)
Cultivated widely as an ornamental plant, Lavender is also used as a
culinary herb and for the extraction of essential oils. Our interpretation of
this flower is created from 117 LEGO® elements and includes a sand green
stem, reddish-brown stalks, golden leaves and lavender-coloured flowers.

4
ASTER (Asteraceae)
Named from the ancient Greek word for star, there are around 180 species of this
popular flower in the same family. They bloom in late summer and early autumn and
their bright colours make them particularly attractive to pollinators such as birds,
bees and butterflies. There are 67 elements in this LEGO® Aster, almost all of them
closely clustered together in the spectacular bloom.

5
COMMON DAISY (Bellis perennis)
The most common of all the European species of daisy, this perennial flower blooms
from early to mid-summer and enjoys a long flowering season. The LEGO® version of
the daisy includes 3 blooms plus a small shoot that still has to flower.

6
CALIFORNIA POPPY (Eschscholzia californica)
Native to California and Mexico, this poppy flowers throughout the summer
months in vibrant shades of orange, red and yellow. It’s the official state flower
of California and is often used to garnish local traditional food recipes.
34 elements are used to create the LEGO® version of the delicate poppy and
the upper petals can be adjusted to be more open or closed.

Common questions

Using traditional LEGO parts in new thematic sets like the Flower Bouquet offers several benefits. It fosters creativity by encouraging designers to find new applications for existing elements, reducing the need for unique molds. This approach also enhances sustainability and cost-effectiveness. However, challenges include ensuring that these parts convincingly represent new themes without losing aesthetic realism or functionality. Designers must balance innovation with recognizable LEGO aesthetics, which requires precise planning and execution to maintain user engagement and satisfaction .

The LEGO design process creatively repurposes existing parts for new applications, exemplified in the Flower Bouquet set. For instance, leaf elements originated as LEGO 'claw' components, while petal elements typically used in vehicles now form part of the flowers. The sand green stem uses a LEGO Technic axle, a first in this color, and bright purple blossoms, typically droid heads in LEGO Star Wars sets, are utilized as flower centers. These adaptive design choices reflect LEGO’s innovative approach to reusing established parts to craft unique models .

The LEGO Flower Bouquet set exemplifies the adaptability of LEGO elements by repurposing parts from various lines, such as vehicle elements for petals and droid heads from Star Wars sets as flower centers. This cross-utilization across themes showcases LEGO's ability to innovate while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic. It highlights the versatility of existing components, reducing the need for new molds and materials, which is both cost-effective and environmentally beneficial. This strategy enhances creativity and sustainability in LEGO's product design .

Inclusion of specific flower types such as the California Poppy and Common Daisy in the LEGO Flower Bouquet set serves educational purposes by fostering awareness of global flora and broadening cultural appreciation. The California Poppy, as the state flower, introduces users to California's botanical heritage, while the Common Daisy connects to European floral traditions. Through the play experience, builders learn about these plants' real-world significance and distribution, providing an engaging platform for ecological and cultural education .

The collaboration between Anderson Grubb and Astrid Sundorf Christensen was pivotal in the design of the LEGO Flower Bouquet set. Anderson Grubb drew inspiration from childhood visits to his grandmother’s garden, carefully selecting flowers that could be effectively translated into LEGO shapes. He and Astrid worked closely, especially on the Aster flower, combining their talents to refine the color palette and finalize the bouquet arrangement. Astrid's involvement, stemming from her work with LEGO ATE, allowed her to bring her flower-building expertise to the project, enhancing its creative depth. This collaboration not only strengthened the bouquet's design but also solidified Astrid’s interest in further LEGO product development .

The LEGO Flower Bouquet set embodies both ecological and cultural themes through its diverse selection of flower types. The set includes the Lavender, an economically significant plant known for its ornamental and medicinal uses; the Aster, valued for its biodiversity and attractiveness to pollinators; the California Poppy, a nod to its cultural symbolism as California's state flower; and the Common Daisy, a widespread European species. This mix not only celebrates global flora but also highlights ecological relationships, as many of these flowers play crucial roles in their natural habitats, promoting biodiversity and ecological balance .

Innovative techniques in the LEGO Flower Bouquet set include the use of C-snap elements and adjustable petals, allowing for interactive play features. These elements permit the petals to be repositioned, simulating the natural variation in flower bloom states. This design addresses both aesthetic and functional aspects, providing users the ability to customize the bouquet's appearance and ensuring a dynamic building experience. Additionally, the creative use of existing elements from other LEGO sets, such as repurposing vehicle parts for floral constructs, highlights both resourcefulness and creativity in design .

Sensory memory, particularly childhood experiences, significantly influenced the design of the LEGO Flower Bouquet set. Designer Anderson Grubb tapped into his vivid memories of visiting his grandmother’s garden, which served as an emotional and visual reference point. This experience was instrumental in selecting which flowers to replicate in LEGO form, aiming to evoke the same visual vibrancy and sentimental value. The intensity of colors and the choice of flower types from his past memories are reflected in the careful design and arrangement of the set .

The LEGO ATE program plays an important role in nurturing talent by creating opportunities for employees with specific needs to engage in creative tasks. Through participation in smaller LEGO build projects, employees like Astrid Sundorf Christensen were able to showcase their skills and get involved in significant projects like the Flower Bouquet set. This involvement has not only been a stepping stone for personal development but has also driven participants like Astrid to pursue further opportunities in LEGO product development, thereby contributing to both personal and organizational growth .

Color selection plays a crucial role in the realism and appeal of the LEGO Flower Bouquet set. Designers Anderson Grubb and Astrid Sundorf Christensen emphasized a vibrant and diverse color palette to mimic natural floral hues, enhancing both visual interest and authenticity. Colors like lavender, bright orange, and sand green are carefully chosen to reflect real-life flowers and foliage. These choices not only heighten the aesthetic appeal but also aid in pattern recognition and differentiation for builders, making the set more engaging and lifelike .
