CONTACT PROCESS
Introduction
Sulphuric acid is highly corrosive and colourless
liquid with a viscous [Link] is one of the most
widely used and important industrial Echemical
NOT TO SELF
compound due to its versatile nature and unique
[Link] is often called oil of vitriol because in
past it was obtained through distillation of green
[Link] acid is obtained by two
[Link] first process is lead chamber
process and the second is contact process but
now contact process is used worldwide because it
gives sulphur as well as sulphur trioxide and oleum
CONTACT PROCESS
The contact process was invented by a
British merchant named Peregrine
[Link] was patented in the year
[Link] from being an economical
process for manufacturing sulphuric
acid,sulphur trioxide and oleum are also
obtained from this [Link]
process is dived into four steps which are
described as under
STEP 1: Sulphur Combustion
Sulphur is typically obtained from natural resources,such as sulphur deposits or
sulphur containing [Link] sulphur is extracted or [Link] in the first
step,elemental sulphur(S) is burned in the presence of oxygen(O2).This
combustion reaction generates sulphur dioxide(SO2).It is a straight forward
reaction where sulphur combines with oxygen.
S+O2--------->SO2
STEP 2:Conversion Of Sulphur
Dioxide Into Sulphur Trioxide
Sulphur dioxide is converted into sulphur trioxide in this [Link]
conversion is achieved through a catalytic process at high temprature.A
vanadium oxide catalyst is used to facilitate this [Link] balanced
equation for this reaction is:
2SO2+O2------->2SO3
STEP 3:Formation Of Oleum
The sulphur trioxide in the previous step is then mixed with
concenterated sulphuric [Link] mixture forms oleum(fuming
sulphuric acid),which is essentially a combination of sulphuric acid and
sulphur [Link] is an important intermediate in the sulphuric
acid production [Link] is an exothermic reaction,and it needs to
be carefully controlled to avoid excessive heat release.
SO3+H2SO4-------->H2S2O7
STEP 4:Dilution Of Oleum
In the final step,the oleum is carefully diluted with water to produce
concentrated sulphuric [Link] dilution process is highly
[Link],it needs to be carried out slowly and with proper
temprature control to avoid overheating and potential [Link]
dilution with water is typically done in a controlled manner to achieve the
desired concenteration of sulphuric [Link] four steps from
combustion to dilution,make up the contact process of sulphuric acid
,which is one of the most important industrial chemicals used in a wide
range
H2S2O7+H2O------>2H2SO4

very much!
