ISRO to Venture into Planetary Defense:-

Bengaluru, India – The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has
announced plans to expand its focus into planetary defense, a move aimed at
protecting Earth from potential asteroid impacts. The initiative involves
developing advanced technologies to detect, track, and mitigate the risks
posed by Near-Earth Objects (NEOs).

ISRO's objectives include enhancing space situational awareness (SSA) by

deploying sophisticated telescopes and radar systems to monitor space for
hazardous asteroids. Additionally, the agency plans to collaborate with global
space agencies like NASA, ESA, and JAXA, sharing data and expertise to create
a coordinated planetary defense strategy.

As part of the effort, ISRO will also explore technologies for asteroid deflection,
including kinetic impactors and gravitational tractors, to divert any potentially
dangerous NEOs. The organization aims to launch dedicated missions to study
asteroids, further improving risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

This move reflects ISRO’s growing space capabilities and its commitment to
contributing to global space security. It is expected to strengthen India's
position as a key player in space exploration while addressing the increasing
concerns about the threat of asteroid impacts.

This new direction underscores ISRO's continued evolution, not just as a leader
in space exploration but also as a critical participant in safeguarding the
planet’s future.
Objectives:

1. Enhance Space Situational Awareness (SSA)

o Goal: Develop advanced detection systems to monitor and track

Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), including asteroids and comets that
could pose a threat to Earth.

2. Foster International Collaboration

o Goal: Collaborate with global space agencies like NASA, ESA, and
JAXA to share data, resources, and expertise in planetary defense
efforts.

3. Develop Asteroid Impact Mitigation Strategies

o Goal: Investigate and research technologies to deflect or

neutralize hazardous asteroids, such as kinetic impactors, nuclear
methods, or gravitational tractors.

4. Launch Dedicated Missions to Study NEOs

o Goal: Plan and execute space missions dedicated to studying the

characteristics, composition, and behavior of NEOs in order to
assess potential risks.

5. Build and Deploy Advanced Detection Technologies

o Goal: Design and deploy state-of-the-art telescopes, radar

systems, and optical sensors to track and identify NEOs at an early
stage.

6. Space-Based Mitigation Technologies

o Goal: Research space-based technologies to alter the trajectory of

hazardous asteroids if one is found to be on a collision course with
Earth.

7. Public Awareness and Global Cooperation

o Goal: Raise awareness about asteroid threats and encourage

international collaboration for planetary defense.
Expected Outcomes:

1. Improved Early Detection of NEOs

o Through the deployment of advanced telescopes and radar

systems, ISRO aims to significantly improve the early detection of
NEOs, allowing for more time to assess risk and plan potential
mitigation efforts.

2. Strengthened Global Space Cooperation

o ISRO’s collaboration with international space agencies will foster

data sharing, coordinated monitoring, and joint responses to
planetary defense, contributing to a more unified global effort.

3. Development of Asteroid Mitigation Solutions

o Research into deflection technologies could lead to practical

solutions for altering the paths of hazardous asteroids. This might
involve using kinetic energy or gravity-based methods to redirect
asteroids before they reach Earth.

4. Increased Understanding of NEOs

o Dedicated missions to study asteroids will provide critical data on

their physical properties, orbits, and behavior, which will help
improve risk assessment models and inform planetary defense
strategies.

5. Robust Planetary Defense Infrastructure

o By building and deploying advanced detection and monitoring

technologies, ISRO will enhance its ability to track space objects
and contribute to global space situational awareness (SSA)
systems.

6. Long-Term Protection Against Asteroid Impacts

o The ongoing development of mitigation technologies could lead to

viable methods for diverting or preventing catastrophic asteroid
impacts, reducing the risks to Earth in the future.
Opinion:

ISRO’s decision to venture into planetary defense is both forward-

thinking and strategically sound. While planetary defense has
traditionally been seen as the domain of larger space agencies like NASA
and ESA, ISRO’s entry into this field reflects the growing importance of
global cooperation in safeguarding Earth from space-based threats.

India’s space program has made remarkable strides in recent years, with
successful missions to Mars, the Moon, and space stations. Now, by
focusing on planetary defense, ISRO is showing that it is not only
committed to advancing scientific knowledge but also ensuring the safety
of the planet. This proactive approach can position India as a leader in
space security, while also providing India with the necessary tools to
assess and respond to potential asteroid impacts.
