Russ Temple reporting from Helena
2025 Week 5
This week was one of the most disappointing weeks
I have seen in all 5 sessions I have been involved in as a
Montana State Senator.
Typically, if a bill has a legal note, meaning it will
likely end up in court and cost the state untold amounts
of money, I do not support such a bill. We had a bill,
SB 114, proposed to make it mandatory that public
schools have a copy of the 10 commandments placed
in all public-school classrooms. Don’t get me wrong,
I personally believe in the 10 commandments and try
my best to live by those rules. A well-meaning Senator
had brought the bill. However, given the longstanding
separation in our country of church and state, this
bill will go straight to court. There was a very good
discussion. But, as I sat listening to the arguments, all
I could think of was all the big law firms charging $450
an hour for each of the 3 or 4 lawyers they send to court,
to sue the State of Montana. Believe me, those law firms
are watching as we have those bills on the floor of the
Senate.
Another bill, HB 20, working its way through this
session is aiming to change how local property tax
levies are calculated. It would make all voted-on mill
levies a fixed dollar amount and not based on the value
of a local mill value. Currently each mill collects $1 per
$1,000 of a property’s taxable value. This change is to
keep the levy more understood by the voter and not
floating up and down as property values change. When I
served as a Liberty County Commissioner, we proposed
some dollar levies. This bill would make it mandatory
that all voted levies statewide be based on a fixed dollar
amount.
Now the sad news, the floor session came to a head
Thursday with what I have been witnessing since day
one. A number of legislators from my party called out
and pointed fingers at a number of other legislators,
also from my party. If you would like to see that floor
session and see who the instigators have been, tune into
the February 6th Senate floor session ([Link]). I
might point out that the same 13 instigator legislators
have voted against a lot of good bills this session. In my
opinion, they’re operating with their own interests in
mind and not the interests of Montanans. These fellow
legislators have not been willing to work as a party from
day one, very disappointing.
As always, stay safe!
