Workbook Activity Week 2
Organising Your Time
Often when students are not doing well at university, it is because they have not
devoted enough time to their studies.
On average, a full-time student attends class 12-16 hours a week. This isn’t very
much time. But don’t be fooled!!! To do well at university you need to dedicate at
least 36 hours a week to your studies (this includes class time and time spent
studying outside of class – reading, making notes, preparing assignments). If you are
a part-time student then you need only spend part of that time (two units then 18
hours a week).
If you develop good time management skills early on, you will find that university is
not all that daunting.
Task 1: Complete prior to class
On the next page prepare a study schedule.
1. colour code. Assign a different colour (or shading) for each of your units
2. add in all of you lectures, lab class and tutorials etc
3. add in all your other commitments: part time work, sporting activities, time with
family etc
4. add in your study time. Make sure that the study time and class time comes to
approximately 36 hours (or 18 hours if part-time) in total. Make sure that you
assign an equal number of hours for each unit (i.e., you will have to colour
code you study time for each unit separately)
5. review the schedule. While university should be a top priority; there is, after all,
more to life than studying. Have you scheduled in time to socialise with
friends, sleep, eat etc. If your study schedule isn’t working perhaps you need
to look at cutting back on something else such as the number of hours in your
part-time job.

Task 2: Complete prior to class
Organising your Lab report preparation time.
Often the reason students do not do well in major assessment tasks is because they
have not allowed for enough time to prepare the work. (In other words, they leave it
until the last minute.)
In this unit the lab report is worth 40% of the overall grade; it is therefore a major task
and thus it takes many weeks to prepare it to a university standard.
We recommend that students work on the lab report task weekly over a six week
period. For further information on the lab report, complete Lesson 1 found in the “Lab
Report” Module on LEO.
For the lab report you will be required to:
• Research a topic: read the required readings (which will be announced on
LEO at the end of week 3) and find at least one other referred journal article
relating to the topic.
• Write the required sections: Introduction, Method, Discussion and Abstract.
• Present the lab report in correct APA formatting.
Write a schedule for completing the lab report. Next to each week write what you
should have completed by the end of the week. Hint: the tutorial tasks (see schedule
in unit outline) will be of assistance. The tutorial tasks show you when and what
topics related to the lab report are covered during class time.
