Structural Design Review Certification of
4 Storied Residential Building with one Basement at Joarshara, Plot-24, Lake Drive, Nikunja
I, the undersigned in my capacity as Individual Structural Design Reviewer, reviewed the structural design of 04
storied residential building at Plot-24, JoarShahara, Nikunja Residential Model Town, Badda, Dhaka, Bangladesh do
hereby certify the following in relation to its engineering design:
1. That the existing structural drawings showed that the structure was designed as a 3 storied residential
building with one basement considering Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC).
2. The structural design of the said structure was reviewed by preparing 3D Finite Element Model in ETABS ver.
9.6.0 considering 4 story building with one basement.
3. In the process of reviewing the design, the following loads and load combinations were considered:
Sl. No. Loading Data Load Consideration
01. Dead Load a) Self weight of members
b) Floor finish = 25psf
c) Wall Load = 40 psf
02. Live Load a) Basement, Typical Floor & Roof = 60psf
b) Stair case = 100 psf
03. Wind Load Basic Wind Speed =210 km/hr for building located near Dhaka
04. Earthquake Load Z=0.15 &R=8 for building located in Zone-2 near Dhaka
Load Combinations are as per BNBC-2006
4. Basement Mat was modeled in SAFE ver. 12.2.0 and Soil bearing capacity at a depth of 10’-0” was considered
as 1 ksf as per instruction of very soft soil given in ‘Design Criteria & Minimum Requirements.’The foundation
of the structure was designed as a 24”thick raft/mat supported directly on soil of soft clay [Link]
are the findings regarding basement:
a) Bearing of the Mat is marginally overstressed (ratio=1.2) considering a soil bearing capacity of 1 ksf.
Since, stage construction happened and the load was distributed over the larger area for a period of 2
years, it is apparent that the soil bearing capacity might have improved.
b) Flexural design of the said Mat was found satisfactory. Capacity in punching shear was found adequate
with a maximum punching ratio observed as 0.33 below central column.
5. The columns are found of having lack of adequate rebar. This is more vibrant due to lateral loading at the
[Link] the central columns, the sizes need to be increased as capacity ratio exceeds limit.
6. Grade & Floor Beams are found satisfactory to their loading and rebar arrangement.

7. Slab Thickness (5”) is found adequate whilst the rebar provided are marginally satisfactory.
8. Design of other structural members like basement wall, staircase, and reservoirs are found adequate.
Hence, it can be concluded that, further investigation along with NDT(nondestructive test) tests and
retrofitting measures would be required for the said building especially in the columns of the structure in
order to achieve a safer performance.
