MSc "Global Change Ecology and Novel Ecosystems
(ecOne)" (program of Faculty of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow
State University implemented at the Faculty of Biology, Shenzhen
MSU-BIT University)

MASTER’S IN: Biology

DURATION: 2 years
WORKLOAD: 120 credits
TEACHING LANGUAGE: English
TUITION FEE: 425,000 RUB per year
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The Master's program in Global Change Ecology
and Novel Ecosystems focuses on the complex
causes and far-reaching consequences of global
change. Students will learn about the multifaceted nature of global change, encompassing changes in
climate, land use, water and biogeochemical cycles, as well as environmental pollution and the loss of
biodiversity, and how these changes impact all levels of biological organization, from molecules to
ecosystems.
The primary focus of the Master's program will be novel ecosystems that are human-built, modified
natural, or engineered niches of the biosphere (anthroposphere). They exist in places that have been
altered in structure and function by human agency. Novel ecosystems are part of the human environment
and habitats (including urban, suburban, and rural); they lack natural analogs, and they have extended an
influence that has converted more than three-quarters of the Earth’s wilderness.
Specific attention within the Master's program is given to the development of nature-based solutions,
where fundamental knowledge of ecosystems is translated into applied ecosystem management that
addresses the negative impacts of global change.
BENEFITS:
✔ As specialists in global change biology, graduates will develop the necessary skills to analyze policy,
influence decision-making, and implement novel solutions for a sustainable economy.
✔ The increasing recognition that global change poses a clear challenge to society makes expertise
on the subject a widely sought-after asset for any future professional career
✔ Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the degree from Lomonosov
Moscow University and SMBU.
CAREERS:

99% of students find a job within 3 months of graduation. Graduates of the program are also qualified to
move on to pursuing a PhD and to a career in academia and research institutions. Graduates have a wide

FACULTY OF GEOGRAPHY
Since the foundation of the Moscow State University in 1755, great attention has
been paid to geographical research. However, a separate faculty was not created
from the very beginning. In 1863, the Department of Physical Geography was
opened as part of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. The Department of
Geography and Ethnography was added to the Faculty of History and Philology in
1884. Finally, the Faculty of Geography was opened on June 23, 1938.
Today, the field of geography studies the laws of formation and development of the environment and
natural, historical, and economic factors behind the territorial distribution of productive forces. The
Faculty of Geography conducts research and education on a wide range of fields in geography,
environmental and earth sciences, hydrometeorology, environmental management, cartography,
geoinformatics, remote sensing, and tourism. About 800 employees, including 100 professors/Doctors of
Science and 300 PhD researchers, work on the Faculty.
Nowadays, the MSU Faculty of Geography has
the world’s largest educational, scientific, and
student community of geographers. More than
1000 BSc and MSc students, and approximately
200 PhD students study in 15 Departments of
the Faculty every year. There are a large
number of students from China, Iran, France,
Germany, and other countries, who also study
geography on the Faculty.
The Faculty has 15 departments and 8 research
laboratories, 4 research stations, and 28
department laboratories. There are also several
computer rooms and analytical laboratories,
and a laboratory of mathematical modeling. The
Faculty of Geography has its own publishing facilities and a photo laboratory. The Faculty's Map Library is
a major depository of Russian and Soviet topographic and thematic maps (over 300,000 sheets). The
Faculty of Geography Reading Hall, which is a part of the University Library, provides immediate access to
over 200,000 titles of books, journals, and atlases. Since 1946, the Faculty has published a bi-monthly
scientific magazine “Vestnik Moskovskogo Universiteta. Geografia” [Moscow University Herald.
Geography] and a journal “Geography, Environment, Sustainability” published in English since 2010. The
Earth Science Museum of the Moscow State University plays an important role in the training of
geographers and in research activities, as well as the Faculty's Meteorological Observatory.
The Faculty graduates work to protect and improve the environment. Their profound theoretical
knowledge and practical skills in modern scientific methods are combined with their ability to see various
geographical issues in connection with natural and environmental issues. Our graduates are employed by
the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the CIS academies of sciences, as well as by research
and governmental institutions, educational institutions, Hydrometeorological Service, Ruscartography,
and enterprises in the field of ecology, resources, tourism, etc.
