Experiment Worksheet Exp 3.2
Procedure
1. Using a spatula, transfer some sodium chloride solid onto a watch glass.
2. Moisten a clean flame test rod with concentrated hydrochloric acid.
3. Dip the flame test rod into the crushed sample.
4. Hold the flame test rod by a pair of tongs, heat the end of the rod in the hottest part of a non-
luminous Bunsen flame.
5. Record the flame colour observed in the Result Table.
6. Rinse the flame test rod and moisten it with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Heat the rod in the
Bunsen flame again. If the same colour appears again, repeat the cleaning procedures until no
flame colour is observed.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 using the compounds in the Result Table in turns.

Summary
A flame test can be used to identify the metal element present in a compound. Some metals and metallic
compounds produce a characteristic flame colour in the flame test.

Questions
1. What metal ion does common salt contain? Explain your answer.
Common
salt contains sodium ion as flame colourof
the common salt is golden yellow
which isthe flame colour
2.
produced
by sodium ion
Suggest how to distinguish between a calcium compound and a potassium compound.
Moisten two clean platinum or nichrome wirewith
concentrated hydrochloric acid Then dip thm into a crushed sample
of thecalcium compound and potassium compound respectively Afterthat
heatthe endof the wire in a non luminous Bunsen flame
with the samples
Calcium compound and potassium compound produces brick red
flame and Nd flame respectively
