STAGE 1
Problem Identification – Soil Erosion in Farming at Langham Girls High
1.1Problem Identification
Soil erosion due to intensive practices in the school garden or grounds at
Langham Girls High School can lead to soil degradation and loss of fertility,
potentially impacting the school’s agricultural projects or landscaping.
Implementing sustainable gardening practices, such as mulching or cover
cropping, could help mitigate soil erosion and maintain soil health.
1.2 Problem Description
Soil erosion can result in reduced crop yields, increased sedimentation in
waterways, and loss of biodiversity.
1.3 Statement of intent
I intend to develop sustainable farming practices that reduce soil erosion and
promote soil health.
1.3 The main idea
The main idea is to promote sustainable agriculture practices that prioritize
soil conservation.
1.5Design Specifications
The solution must:
Reduce soil erosion and sedimentation
Promote soil health and fertility
Be economically viable for farmers
Minimize environmental impact
STAGE 2 :
Investigation of Related Ideas
2.1Existing solutions
Conservation tillage
Cover cropping
Crop rotation
2.2 Data Collection
I gathered information through:
Literature review
Farmer interview
Soil analysis
Data analysis
Strengths:
-Conservation tillage reduces soil disturbance
-Cover cropping promotes soil health
Weaknesses:
- Initial investment costs
- Potential yield reductions
2.3 Recommendations
Based on my research, I recommend:
1. Implementing conservation tillage
2. Using cover cropping and crop rotation
Stage 3: Generation of Ideas
3.1 New ideas include:
Planting trees grasses- Planting trees and grasses in our school area
can help hold the soil in place and prevent erosion. Tree roots dig deep
into the soil, while grass roots spread wide, both helping to keep the
soil stable.
Mulching- Mulching involves covering the soil with organic materials
like leaves, straw, or wood chips. This helps to absorb rainwater and
reduce runoff, preventing soil erosion.
Creating a Rain Garden- A rain garden is a shallow depression in the
ground that collects rainwater and allows it to slowly soak into the soil.
This helps to reduce runoff and prevent erosion.
Adding compost- Adding compost to the soil can help improve its
structure and increase its ability to absorb water. This can reduce
runoff and prevent erosion.
Building a Stone or Brick Pathway- Pathways using stones or bricks can
help direct water flow and prevent soil erosion in our school area. This
can also help to keep the soil in place and prevent it from being
washed away.
These solutions are easy to implement and can make a big difference in
preventing soil erosion in our school area!
3.2 Modification of existing solutions
We can modify existing solutions by:
Incorporating organic amendments
Using buffer strips
Presentation of ideas
We will present our ideas through:
Visual presentations
Farm demonstrations
Workshops
STAGE 4
Development of Ideas
4.1 Chosen ldea
I prefer to plant trees and grasses
4.2 Refinement of ldea
We will refine our idea by:
-Selecting native tree and grass species that are well-suited to the local
climate and soil conditions.
-Planting trees and grasses in strategic locations, such as on slopes or areas
prone to erosion.
-Implementing a regular maintenance schedule to ensure the trees and
grasses are healthy and thriving.
-Creating a buffer zone around the planted areas to protect them from foot
traffic and other potential damage.
-Educating students and staff about the importance of soil conservation and
involving them in the planting of trees and grasses
STAGE 5
Presentation of Results
STAGE 6
Recommendations and Evaluation
6.1 Evaluation
Planting trees and grasses has been shown to be an effective method in
reducing soil erosion. The roots of the trees and grasses help hold the soil in
place, while the vegetation absorbs rainwater and reduces runoff. This
approach not only prevents soil loss but also enhances biodiversity, improves
air quality, and creates a more aesthetically pleasing environment. Overall,
planting trees and grasses is a sustainable and environmentally friendly
solution to mitigate soil erosion.
6.2 Relevance to statement of intent
This project aligns with our intention to promote sustainable agriculture
practices.
6.3 Recommendations
1. Scaling up sustainable farming practices
2. Providing incentives for farmers to adopt sustainable practices
3. Continuing research and development in sustainable agriculture
