Lysosomes: The Cell's Suicide Bags

The document provides notes on cell organelles, specifically lysosomes and mitochondria, detailing their functions and characteristics. Lysosomes are described as 'suicidal bags' due to their role in digesting damaged cells, while mitochondria are highlighted for their folded inner membranes that enhance energy production. Additionally, it discusses types of plastids in plants, the effects of water loss on plant leaves, cell division types (mitosis and meiosis), and includes activities for drawing and analogies related to cell functions.

CH-5 FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE

CLASS NOTE-5

LYSOSOME

Q. Which of the following organelle is called the “suicidal bags” of the cell?

a) Cytoplasm. b) Lysosomes.

b) Mitochondria. c) Endoplasmic reticulum.

Q) Imagine a situation where a cell is damaged due to infection or injury. How do

lysosomes respond in such a scenario, and why are they referred to as the "suicide
bags" of the cell? Explain with reasoning.

Ans: If the cell gets damaged, then one of the lysosomes bursts and release some digestive
enzymes. The released enzymes then digest their own cell and ultimately the cell dies.
Hence, lysosomes are called suicide bags of the cell.

MITOCHONDRIA

Q) . Draw and label the structure of Mitochondria

.Q) Why do mitochondria have largely folded inner membrane?

Ans: Mitochondria is the site for cellular respiration and provides energy to the cell. The
largely folded inner membrane provides the increased surface area for ATP generating
chemical reactions.
(ATP -Adenosine triphosphate)
Q. Different types of plastids are found in different parts of a plant. Can you identify
which type of plastid is more common in the following parts and give real-life examples to
support your answer?

a) Roots b) Leaves c) Flowers d) Fruits

Note: (Either you can draw or print and stick the table in your note)

ASSET BASED QN

Q. In summers, leaves of a potted plant droops when the soil becomes dry. Which
cell organelle makes the leaves to droop?

(a) Nucleus, as it stops making DNA.

(b) Cell wall, as it starts to shrink.

(c) Lysosome, as it is releasing the digestive enzymes.

(d) Vacuole, as it loses all the water.

CELL ANALOGY ACTIVITY: "IS OUR CITY LIKE A CELL?"

Q) If your city were a living cell, what role would each part of the city play?

Create an analogy comparing each cell organelle to a part of your city, based on its
function.

(Take a print out of the cell city and fill in the blank box. Do stick in note)

Q. What are the different types of cell division?

Cell division is a process by which a parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. There
are two types of cell division:

a) Mitosis is the type of cell division that results in the formation of two daughter cells
each with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent cell.

b) Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in the parent
cell by half and produces four gamete cells. This process is required to produce egg and
sperm cells for sexual reproduction.
Activity

Draw a diagram of an animal cell or a plant cell and label the parts.
