FASTEST FINGER FIRST USING IC555
This report details the design, working, and applications of a Fastest Finger
First (FFF) circuit. This circuit is a common element in quiz shows,
competitions, and training scenarios where reaction time is crucial. The
core functionality is to identify and lock the first participant who presses
their button, disabling other participants from registering their input.
INTRODUCTION:
The Fastest Finger First circuit is an electronic system designed to detect
and identify the first person to press a button among multiple participants.
Once a participant presses their button, the circuit registers their input,
illuminates a corresponding indicator (typically an LED), and prevents any
further input from other participants. This "locking" mechanism ensures that
only the fastest response is recorded.

COMPONENTS USED:
Components Required For Each Module:
● 555 Timer IC
● Momentary Push Button Switch
● PN Diode (I used 1N4148)
● LED + Series Resistor (270R)
● 10K Resistor
Components Common For All Modules:
● 2 x 1K Resistors
● LED + Series Resistor (270R)
● Momentary Push Button (For resetting)
● Breadboard
● (5-12)V Power Supply
PRINCIPLE:
The FFF circuit operates based on the following principles:
[Link] Press Detection: Each contestant is assigned a push
button that, when pressed, sends an electrical signal to the
circuit.
[Link] Locking Mechanism: The circuit ensures that only
the first button press is registered, preventing others from
triggering an output until the system is reset.
[Link] Mechanism: A latch or flip-flop stores the first signal
and blocks further inputs.
[Link] System: An LED or a display identifies the fastest
contestant by lighting up the corresponding indicator.
[Link] Function: A separate reset button is used to clear the
circuit and prepare for the next round.
WORKING:
● If Pin-2 of 555 IC sees any voltage less than 1/3rds of the
supply voltage, it turns the output ON
● If the reset Pin of 555 IC sees 0V, it resets the output
● Reset rail which is pulled up to positive voltage by default
using a 1K resistor
● Status / Feedback rail which is pulled down to 0V by default
using a 1K resistor. This rail is connected to output of all the
modules via diodes. So this rail will be at 0V by default. But
as soon as any of the modules output is ON, the voltage at
this rail reaches positive voltage via the diode
So when the output of all the modules are in OFF state, the
voltage at status rail will be at 0V (default). When any team
presses the button, this 0V from status rail is applied at Pin-2.
Because 0V is less than 1/3rds of the supply voltage, the output of
555 IC corresponding to the team which pressed the trigger first
turns ON.
Immediately after this happens, the voltage at status rail changes
to positive voltage because of the feedback via PN diode. So even
if other teams press the trigger now, the voltage at Pin-2 of the
respective modules will be at positive voltage and the output
doesn’t turn ON.
Applications:
● Quiz competitions
● Game shows
● Educational contests
Advantages:
● Simple Design: Relatively easy to implement with basic
electronic components.
● Effective Locking: Reliably registers only the first
response.
● Low Cost: Components are inexpensive and readily
available.
Disadvantages:
● Limited Number of Participants: The basic circuit design
can become complex with a large number of participants.
More sophisticated designs using encoders or
microcontrollers might be necessary.
● Manual Reset: Requires a manual reset after each round.
Automated reset mechanisms could be implemented.
Conclusion:
The Fastest Finger First circuit is an efficient and reliable way to manage
competitions by ensuring fairness. It locks the first response, prevents
conflicts, and provides a visual/audible indication of the fastest participant.
The simple yet effective design makes it an essential component in quiz-
based events.
