Manufacturing Processes

1. Introduction to Manufacturing

Manufacturing is the process of transforming raw materials into finished products. It encompasses a wide variety of

technologies and methods such as forming, machining, casting, welding, and more. Manufacturing is the backbone of

industrial development and includes manual, semi-automated, and fully automated production techniques.

2. Casting & Molding

Casting involves pouring molten material into a mold to create a part. Common methods include sand casting, die

casting, and investment casting. Molding, often used with plastics, includes injection molding and compression molding.

Both techniques are used when complex geometries are involved.

3. Machining Processes

Machining includes subtractive methods like turning, milling, drilling, and grinding. These processes are used for

high-precision manufacturing. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) has revolutionized machining by allowing

programmable control over operations.

4. Welding & Joining

Welding joins materials, typically metals or thermoplastics, using high heat. Types include arc welding, MIG, TIG, and

friction welding. Other joining techniques include soldering, brazing, and adhesive bonding. Each method has trade-offs

in terms of strength, cost, and application.

5. Advanced Manufacturing Techniques

Modern techniques include Additive Manufacturing (3D printing), Laser Beam Machining (LBM), and Ultrasonic

Machining (USM). These are used for specialized applications involving hard-to-machine materials or intricate

geometries.
