Personality-2, Component of PD, Concepts of Successfulness
Gordon W. Allport's personality theory
Gordon Allport was among the first psychologists to study personality in depth. In his
book "Personality: A Psychological Interpretation" (1937), he defined personality as the
dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that
determine their unique adjustments to the environment.
Key Features:
❖ Personality is not static; it changes over time, age, and due to socio-cultural
influences.
❖ It includes both physical (such as body structure) and mental (such as thoughts and
emotions) components.
Allport’s Classification of Traits:
❖ Cardinal Traits: Highly dominant traits that become the defining characteristics of a
person’s identity (e.g., calling someone a “Hitler” or a “Romeo”).
❖ Central Traits: Core qualities commonly used to describe people’s personalities, such as
honest, shy, or sociable.
❖ Secondary Traits: Traits that appear in specific situations, such as stage fright before
a performance or anxiety before an exam.
Contribution of Raymond Cattell
❖ Cattell condensed Allport’s 4,000 traits into 16 primary personality factors, which
he measured through the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF).
❖ This tool is used by career and personal counselors to provide guidance in professional
decision-making and personal development.
❖ The 16 Primary Factors are:
➢ Warmth, Reasoning, Emotional Stability, Dominance, Liveliness, Rule-
Consciousness, Social Boldness, Sensitivity, Vigilance, Abstractedness, Privateness,
Apprehension, Openness to Change, Self-Reliance, Perfectionism, Tension.
Sigmund Freud: Psychoanalytic Theory
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis—a method that
treats mental disorders through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.

Three major structures of personality
Id:
❖ The primitive part of the brain which is present from birth; it seeks instant
fulfillment of desires and instincts. It works on the Pleasure Principle.
Ego
❖ Develops through interaction with parents and society. It internalises social rules and
norms.
Superego/super-ego
❖ The center of moral consciousness; it is shaped by parental and social values. It
reflects our sense of right and wrong.
Levels of Consciousness:
❖ Conscious –About which we have complete knowledge at the present. Example: What
you are seeing, hearing and thinking right now.
❖ Preconscious– Memories or information that can be recalled instantly. Example: Old
school name or mobile number which can be recalled with little effort.
❖ Unconscious-Hidden desires, fears and experiences that deeply influence our
behaviour. Example: Childhood fears or repressed desires that influence our decisions
without our consciousness.
Five Component Model of Personality (Big Five Traits)
The Big Five Personality Model is a widely accepted theory that categorizes personality
into five major dimensions. This theory was developed by Robert McCrae and Paul Costa,
and was inspired by the trait theories of Allport and Cattell.
Big Five Personality Dimensions:
❖ Openness to Experience – Reflects creativity, imagination, and a willingness to
embrace new experiences.
➢ High level: Innovative, curious, intellectual
➢ Low level: Traditional, conservative, resistant to change
❖ Conscientiousness – Reflects discipline, responsibility, and goal-oriented behavior.
➢ High level: Organized, reliable, hardworking
➢ Low level: Disorganized, careless, procrastinating
❖ Extraversion – Reflects sociability, self-confidence, and energy.
4
➢ High level: Outgoing, talkative, energetic, attention-seeking
➢ Low level: Reserved, quiet, prefers solitude or small circles
❖ Agreeableness – Reflects cooperation, trust, and kindness.
➢ High level: Empathetic, kind, cooperative, peace-loving
➢ Low level: Self-centered, critical, uncooperative, argumentative
❖ Neuroticism – Reflects stress, anxiety, and negative emotions.
➢ High level: Emotionally unstable, irritable, stressed
➢ Low level: Calm, stable, emotionally strong
Components of Personality Development
❖ Self-Confidence

abilities.
➢ Self-confidence helps in facing any challenge.
❖ Appropriate Attire and Grooming

Obstacles to achieving success
There are many challenges in the way of achieving success, which arise due to mindset,
work style, or external factors. These obstacles can be resolved by identifying them and
making strategies. Let us understand the major obstacles in detail:
Lack of Clear Goals
❖ Lack of guidelines: If you don’t have specific, measurable goals, it’s hard to know what
steps to take and what success looks like.
❖ Unrealistic expectations: Setting too ambitious or unattainable goals can lead to
frustration and demotivation. Therefore, it is essential to set realistic and step-by-
step goals.
Poor Time Management
❖ Procrastination: Delaying tasks leads to missed deadlines, which affects productivity.
❖ Inefficiency: If tasks are not prioritized properly, less important activities may receive
more attention, impacting success.
Fear of Failure
❖ Paralysis by Analysis: Thinking too much about potential setbacks impedes one's
ability to make decisions and act.
❖ Risk Aversion: Avoiding risk can limit opportunities for personal and professional
growth. Embracing new opportunities is vital to success.
Lack of Discipline and Persistence
❖ Inconsistency: Lack of consistent effort can hinder progress. Regularity and self-
control are essential for success.
❖ Giving Up Easily: If a person does not persevere in facing challenges, he cannot
achieve long-term goals. Patience and determination are essential for success.
