1 Before You Install
Before you install DataDirect Connect for ODBC, you need to
verify that you have a supported version of the database, a
supported version of the operating system, and, if necessary, the
correct database client software on your system.
Driver Requirements
The following section describes requirements for DataDirect
Connect for ODBC drivers.
The Btrieve Driver
To access a Btrieve database, you must be using the appropriate
client software for the version of the Btrieve database to which
you are connecting:
Database Versions Client Names
[Link] 2000 [Link] 2000 client software
[Link] 7.0 [Link] 7.0 client software
Btrieve 6.15 for Btrieve Developer’s Kit or
Windows 9x Btrieve WorkStation Client Engine
Btrieve 6.15 for Btrieve Developer’s Kit,
Windows NT Btrieve WorkStation Client Engine, or
Btrieve Client/Server Database Engine
NOTE: The Btrieve driver may experience problems if the Btrieve
Microkernel Engine’s communication buffer size is smaller than
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
16 Chapter 1 Before You Install
the Btrieve driver’s Array Size connection attribute. You can
increase the communication buffer size with the Pervasive
Software Setup Utility. You can decrease the array size option
when you configure a data source using the ODBC Btrieve Driver
Setup dialog box or when passing a connection string.
Before you attempt to access Btrieve files, you must incorporate
existing Btrieve files into a Scalable SQL database. See the Btrieve
chapter of the DataDirect Connect for ODBC Reference for
information on defining table structure.
The DB2 Wire Protocol Driver
The server requirement for all platforms is the same. The DB2
database can be installed as the Server Version or the Personal
Edition.
There are no client requirements for the DB2 Wire Protocol
driver.
The dBASE Driver
There are no client requirements for the dBASE driver.
The Informix Driver
This section provides the system requirements for using the
Informix client-based driver on all supported platforms. If you
want to access an Informix database without having to use client
software, use the Informix Wire Protocol driver. See “The
Informix Wire Protocol Driver” on page 18 for details.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Driver Requirements 17
Windows
To access supported remote Informix databases through the
Informix driver, you need one of the following:
■ Informix Connect for Windows platforms, version 2.x
■ Informix Client Software Development Kit for Windows
platforms, version 2.x
Use the Setnet32 utility supplied by Informix to define servers
and the location of the INFORMIX directory. Use Ilogin to test
your connection to the Informix server. The path to the
[Link] must be in your PATH environment variable.
UNIX (AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris)
The environment variable INFORMIXDIR must be set to the
directory where you have installed the Informix client.
For example, the following syntax is valid for C-shell users:
setenv INFORMIXDIR /databases/informix
For Bourne- or Korn-shell users, the following syntax is valid:
INFORMIXDIR=/databases/informix;export INFORMIXDIR
In addition, the INFORMIXSERVER variable must be set to the
name of the Informix server (as defined in your
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts file). For further details, refer to the
Informix documentation.
To access supported remote Informix databases through the
Informix driver, you need one of the following:
■ On AIX: Informix Client Software Development Kit version
2.2 or higher; or Informix Connect version 2.2 or higher
■ On HP-UX and Solaris: Informix Connect version 2.x
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
18 Chapter 1 Before You Install
■ On HP-UX and Solaris: Informix Client Software Development
Kit version 2.x
NOTE: On AIX platforms, two client drivers are installed, one for
AIX 4.x and one for AIX 5.x. The installer determines the
operating system at the time of installation and configures the
default data source to point to the correct driver.
The Informix Wire Protocol Driver
There are no database client requirements for the Informix Wire
Protocol driver.
If you want to access an Informix database through client
software, use the Informix driver. See “The Informix Driver” on
page 16 for details.
The Oracle Driver
This section provides the system requirements for using the
Oracle client-based driver on both Windows and UNIX. If you
want to access an Oracle database without having to use client
software, use the Oracle Wire Protocol driver. See “The Oracle
Wire Protocol Driver” on page 21 for details.
Windows
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly.
Although an earlier version of a client can access a later version
of a database, for example, client 8.1.6 to server 9.0.1, to insure
that you have access to all of the features of a particular database
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Driver Requirements 19
version, you should use the client that matches the database
version, for example, client 10g to server 10g.
The Oracle 10g R1 (10.1) client is supported only on the
following Windows platforms:
■ NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 6a (not Workstation)
■ 2000 with Service Pack 1 or higher
■ Server 2003
■ XP Professional
The appropriate DLLs for the Oracle client software must be on
your path.
UNIX
IMPORTANT: You must have all components of the Oracle client
software installed; otherwise, the driver will not operate
properly. You must have the appropriate shared libraries and
objects on your path.
Although an earlier version of a client can access a later version
of a database, for example, client 8.1.6 to server 9.0.1, to insure
that you have access to all of the features of a particular
database version, you should use the client that matches the
database version, for example, client 10g to server 10g.
The Oracle 10g R1 (10.1) client is supported only on the
following UNIX platforms:
■ AIX 5.2 Maintenance Level 1 or higher
■ HP-UX 11.i PA-RISC Quality Pack June 2003 or later
■ Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 Update 3; 3.0 Update 1
■ Solaris 8 and 9
■ SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 with Service Pack 3 or higher
Before you can use the Oracle driver, you must have a supported
Oracle client installed on your workstation in the
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
20 Chapter 1 Before You Install
$ORACLE_HOME source tree. ORACLE_HOME is an environment
variable created by the Oracle installation process that identifies
the location of your Oracle client components.
Set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to the directory
where you installed the Oracle client. For example, for C-shell
users, the following syntax is valid:
setenv ORACLE_HOME /databases/oracle
For Bourne- or Korn-shell users, the following syntax is valid:
ORACLE_HOME=/databases/oracle;export ORACLE_HOME
Building the Required Oracle Net8 Shared Library on
HP-UX 11
A one-time site linking to build a replacement Oracle Net8 shared
library is required for Oracle Net8 Client 8.1.6 on HP-UX 11.
This site linking binds your unique Oracle Net8 configuration into
the file, which is used by the Oracle driver to access local and
remote Oracle databases.
The Oracle driver requires the shared library [Link], which is
built by the Oracle script genclntsh. The genclntsh script provided
by Oracle causes errors resulting from undefined symbols. Users
running Oracle8 on specific platforms with certain versions of
Oracle client software (as documented below) must therefore use
the genclntsh816 script provided with the DataDirect Connect for
ODBC Oracle client-based driver to build a replacement [Link].
This script, in the src/oracle directory, places the new [Link] in
../../lib, which is your $ODBC_HOME/lib directory; it does not
overwrite the original [Link] in the $ORACLE_HOME/lib
directory.
Before you build the Oracle Net8 shared library, install Oracle and
set the environment variable ORACLE_HOME to the directory
where you installed Oracle.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Driver Requirements 21
For Oracle Net8 Client 8.1.6 on HP-UX 11, the following
commands build the Oracle Net8 shared library:
cd ${ODBC_HOME}/src/oracle
genclntsh816
WARNING: Oracle8 users will have the original libclntsh library in
the $ORACLE_HOME/lib directory. Therefore, the
$ODBC_HOME/lib directory, containing the correct library, must
be on the SHLIB_PATH before $ORACLE_HOME/lib. Otherwise,
the original Oracle library will be loaded, resulting in the
unresolved symbol error.
Connecting to Oracle 8.1.7 from HP-UX
To connect to Oracle 8.1.7 from HP-UX, you must have the HP
patch PHSS_22514 incorporated into the operating system, and
you must set the LD_PRELOAD system variable to the absolute
path of the [Link] library.
The Oracle Wire Protocol Driver
There are no client requirements for the Oracle Wire Protocol
driver.
If you want to access an Oracle database through client
software, use the Oracle driver. See “The Oracle Driver” on
page 18 for details.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide

9 For an evaluation installation, the Custom Setup window
allows you to choose the DataDirect Connect for ODBC drivers
that you want to install. The following two groups of drivers
are available:
Drivers for All Supported Databases: This group of drivers
includes one driver for each supported database. In the case
of Oracle and Informix, DataDirect Connect for ODBC has two
available drivers that support each of these two databases—a
wire protocol driver that does not require any database client
software to connect to the database, and a client-based driver
that does require client software. We highly recommend the
use of the wire protocol drivers, and therefore, install the
Oracle Wire Protocol and Informix Wire Protocol drivers by
default.
By default, all of the drivers under this group are selected for
installation. If you want to install only certain ODBC drivers,
click the drop-down arrow in the icon for each driver that you
do not want to install and select This feature will not be
available. A red X appears on the individual driver icon(s). If
you decide that you want to reselect the driver for
installation, click the drop-down arrow in the icon and select
This feature will be installed on local hard drive. The red X
disappears from the individual driver icon(s).
If you decide that you do want to install all the drivers after
having deselected some of them, click the drop-down arrow
in the Drivers for All Supported Databases icon and select This
feature, and all subfeatures, will be installed on local hard
drive. The red X disappears from the All ODBC Drivers icon, as
well as from the individual driver icons.
Informix and Oracle Client Drivers: This group of drivers
contains the client-based drivers for accessing Informix and
Oracle databases.
By default, these drivers are not selected for installation. If
you want to install only one of the drivers, click the
drop-down arrow in the icon for that driver and select This

38 Chapter 2 Installation on Windows
Silent Installations
The DataDirect Connect for ODBC Setup provides a command-line
option for silent installations on Windows NT, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows 2003. The silent installation is useful
for system administrators who want to create a batch file to
execute multiple identical installations of DataDirect Connect for
ODBC.
To perform a silent installation:
1 From a command-line prompt, change to the directory
containing the DataDirect Connect for ODBC file [Link], or
insure that this directory is on your path.
2 The command-line syntax for executing a silent installation is:
[Link] /s /v"arguments /qn /l*v path\log"
See “Command-Line Syntax,” for an explanation of the syntax
rules. See Table 2-1 for an explanation of each command-line
parameter. See Table 2-2 and Table 2-3 for an explanation of
the arguments that follow the /v parameter. The tables are
followed by specific examples of the command-line syntax.
3 The installation proceeds without any further user
intervention or notification unless you enter an incorrect key,
in which case an error is displayed. Setup aborts and you must
correct the silent installation command line.
Consult the log that is created during the installation (see
“The Log File” on page 42) to determine whether the
installation was successful and, if it failed, why it failed. You
must have this log available if you contact DataDirect for
technical support.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Silent Installations 39
Command-Line Syntax
In general, there must be a space between all command-line
parameters and between each argument:
[Link] /s /v"arguments /qn /l*v path\log"
The exception is that there cannot be a space between /v and
the double quotation mark that follows it. There can be multiple
arguments and parameters specified between the opening and
closing double quotation marks, but each one must be separated
by a space. The arguments are case-sensitive.
IMPORTANT: When any of the command-line parameters include
a value that contains a space, that value must be preceded and
followed by the escape characters \". For example:
INSTALLDIR=\"C:\Program Files\My Drivers\"
and
CUSTOMER=\"John Doe\"
See “Silent Installation Examples” on page 42.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
40 Chapter 2 Installation on Windows
Parameters and Arguments
See Table 2-1 for an explanation of each command-line
parameter. See Table 2-2 and Table 2-3 for an explanation of the
required and optional arguments that follow the /v parameter.
Table 2-1. Silent Installation Parameters
Parameter Description
/s Instructs Setup to perform a silent installation.
/v"arguments Passes arguments to the installer; the v cannot be followed by a space.
parameters" The arguments and following parameters must be enclosed between
quotation marks.
/qn Additional parameter required to perform a silent installation.
/l*v path\name Instructs the installer to create a text log file of the installation. The v
must be followed by a space, then by the path where you want the log
file created, as well as the name of the log file. The directory you specify
must exist. If you specify a directory that does not exist, the installation
fails.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Silent Installations 41
Table 2-2. Required Arguments
Argument Description
COMPANY=company name Provide your company name.
CUSTOMER=user name Provide your name.
INSTALLDIR=installation directory Provide the directory path where you want to install
the drivers. The suggested default is
C:\Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC32v50.
Because this path contains spaces, you must use
escape characters. See “Command-Line Syntax” on
page 39 for details.
IMPORTANT: DataDirect Connect for ODBC 5.0 cannot
be installed in the same installation location as an
earlier version of DataDirect Connect for ODBC or in
the same location as DataDirect Connect64 for ODBC.
LICENSE=key value Provide the license key for your purchased product or
enter EVAL to install an evaluation copy. If you are
installing multiple licensed products, you can use a
comma-separated list of keys as the key value. There
should be no spaces after the commas in the list.
SERIALNUMBER=serial number value Enter the serial number provided to you or enter
EVAL to install an evaluation copy of all drivers.
Table 2-3. Optional Silent Installation Arguments
Argument Description
DEFAULTDATA=TRUE Creates default data sources.
EXISTINGDRIVER=TRUE Overwrites existing DataDirect Connect for ODBC drivers.
ONLINEBOOKS=TRUE Installs the online books.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
42 Chapter 2 Installation on Windows
Silent Installation Examples
Following are command-line examples of some typical
installations:
Example 1
This command-line installs a licensed copy of a single driver;
creates default data sources; overwrites existing drivers; installs
the online books; creates an installation directory named
\Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC, and creates a log file named
[Link] in the temp directory:
[Link] /s /v"DEFAULTDATA=TRUE EXISTINGDRIVER=TRUE ONLINEBOOKS=TRUE
INSTALLDIR=\"C:\Program Files\DataDirect\ODBC\" CUSTOMER=\"John Doe\"
COMPANY=DDriver SERIALNUMBER=12345 LICENSE=12345678 /qn /l*v D:\temp\[Link]"
Example 2
This command-line installs licensed copies of two drivers; creates
an installation directory named \Program Files\Connect ODBC;
and creates a log file named [Link] in the "odbc log"
directory:
[Link] /s /v"INSTALLDIR=\"C:\Program Files\Connect ODBC\" CUSTOMER=James
COMPANY=\"Laser Products\" SERIALNUMBER=12345 LICENSE=12345678,23456789 /qn
/l*v \"C:\odbc log\[Link]\""
The Log File
The log file created during the installation can be read with a
text editor or word processor. Although the file can be very long,
the most important information is at the beginning and end. The
final lines of the log file indicate whether the installation was
successful. The initial lines reproduce all of the command-line
arguments that you entered. If there was a failure, check the
command-line entries closely to see if the syntax is correct.
DataDirect Technologies provides technical support to help you
interpret the log file if you encounter problems.

52 Chapter 3 Installation on UNIX
Default Installation Directories
The Setup program lets you specify the directory into which the
drivers are installed. By default, the Setup program creates and
installs the drivers in the directory:
/opt/odbc32v50
Installing from a CD
NOTE: The following steps reflect the messages displayed when
installing on Solaris. If you are installing on a different UNIX
platform version, the name of that platform is substituted.
To install from a CD:
1 Insert the CD into the CD drive. On Solaris, by default the
CD-ROM drive mounts automatically when you insert the CD.
The other UNIX platforms supported do not automatically
mount the CD by default. If your workstation is not
configured to mount a CD automatically, you must enter the
command for mounting the drive, as follows:
■ For HP-UX, enter the following commands:
# /usr/sbin/pfs_mountd&
# /usr/sbin/pfsd&
# pfs_mount -o xlat=unix /dev/rdsk/deviceName /cdrom
where deviceName is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using the
HP-UX tool sam. When installation is complete, unmount
the CD-ROM with the command:
# /usr/sbin/pfs_umount /cdrom
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Installing from a CD 53
For example, if the device name for your CD-ROM drive is
/dev/rdsk/c0t4d0, and you want to mount it over the
directory /cdrom, you would enter the following
command:
# pfs_mount -o xlat=unix /dev/rdsk/c0t4d0 /cdrom
■ For IBM-AIX, enter:
# mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/device /cdrom
where device is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using the
AIX tool smit.
■ For Linux, enter:
# mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/device /mnt/cdrom
where device is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive.
2 To run Setup, change to the top-level directory on the CD
and start the following installation script:
ksh [Link]
Setup prompts you to answer questions regarding the
installation. Default answers for the questions are displayed
in square brackets at the end of the prompt. To accept the
default value, press ENTER.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
54 Chapter 3 Installation on UNIX
3 Setup prepares for installation by determining your UNIX
operating system:
The following operating system has been detected:
Solaris
Is this the current operating system on your
machine(Y/N)?[Y]
■ Press ENTER if Setup has detected the correct operating
system and go to the next step.
■ Enter N if Setup did not detect the correct operating
system. The installation is cancelled.
4 The product license agreement appears. Press SPACEBAR
several times to page to the end of the agreement. At the
end, you are asked to accept the agreement:
■ Enter YES (uppercase) to accept the license agreement and
continue with the installation.
■ Enter anything other than YES to abort the installation.
5 The Product Registration prompt appears and requests the
following information, one field at a time:
■ Your name
■ Your company name
■ Serial number
■ Key
Enter your name and the company name. Then, perform one
of the following actions:
■ If you are installing a licensed copy of the product, enter
the serial number and key provided to you by DataDirect
Technologies. Skip to Step 8.
■ If you are installing an evaluation copy of the product,
enter EVAL for the Serial Number and Key fields. Proceed
to Step 6.

Installing from a CD 55
6 Setup displays a prompt that offers you a choice of installing
drivers for:
Drivers for All Supported Databases. This group of drivers
includes one driver for each database supported by the
platform on which you are installing. In the case of Oracle
and Informix, DataDirect Connect for ODBC has two available
drivers that support each of these two databases—a wire
protocol driver that does not require any database client
software to connect to the database, and a client-based
driver that does require client software. We highly
recommend the use of the wire protocol drivers, and
therefore, install the Oracle Wire Protocol and Informix Wire
Protocol drivers by default.
Single Driver. In this case, you can select a driver from any of
the DataDirect Connect for ODBC drivers available for the
platform on which you are installing, including the
client-based Informix and Oracle drivers (if applicable).
If you want to evaluate more than one single driver, Setup
gives you the opportunity after completion of the initial
installation.
■ If you are installing drivers for all supported databases,
enter the appropriate number and skip to Step 8.
■ If you are installing a single driver, enter the appropriate
number and proceed to Step 7.
7 Enter the appropriate number of the single driver you want
to install.
8 Setup displays the product registration information that you
have entered, and you are prompted to accept or change the
information:
■ Press ENTER to accept the information.
■ Enter C to change the information. You are prompted for
the information again.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
56 Chapter 3 Installation on UNIX
9 After you accept the registration information, you are asked
if you would like to install the online books:
■ Enter Y to install the online books.
■ Press ENTER to proceed without installing the books.
NOTE: After installing the first driver, Setup provides you with
the opportunity to install additional drivers; however, you do
not have an additional opportunity to install the books. If you
want to install the books later, you must run Setup again and
reinstall a driver or install the books from the CD. See
“Installing the Online Books” on page 60 for details.
10 You are prompted to enter the full path to the temporary
installation directory. The default is /tmp. The directory you
specify must already exist.
11 Setup verifies the amount of available space in the temporary
directory. If the amount of space is insufficient for installation,
you receive an error message.
12 You are prompted to enter the full path to the installation
directory. This cannot be the same directory as the temporary
installation directory. It also cannot be the directory of an
existing previous version of DataDirect Connect for ODBC or of
a DataDirect Connect64 for ODBC. If the directory you enter
does not exist, Setup creates it.
After completion of the installation, a message appears
indicating that you have installed the software successfully. If you
installed a single driver, you are asked if you want to install
another driver:
■ Press ENTER to install another driver.
■ Enter N to exit Setup.
After installation, you must configure drivers and data sources;
see “Configuring Drivers and Data Sources” on page 58 for
details.

Installing from Downloaded Files 57
Installing from Downloaded Files
DataDirect Technologies makes DataDirect Connect for ODBC
product packages available for either purchase or evaluation via
its download site on the World Wide Web:
[Link]
Installation of any of these packages follows essentially the same
procedure as installation from a CD.
To install the drivers from downloaded files:
1 Download the appropriate DataDirect Connect for ODBC
product compressed file from the electronic site into a
temporary directory, for example, /tmp.
IMPORTANT: Do not download the DataDirect Connect for
ODBC product compressed file to the installation directory
that you will specify during the installation.
2 Switch to the temporary directory and uncompress the
contents of this file. Enter:
uncompress compressed_filename
where compressed_filename is the name of the file you
downloaded, for example, [Link].Z in the case of Solaris.
The file is renamed to [Link] as part of uncompression.
3 Untar the contents of this file. Enter:
tar -xvf tar_filename
where in the case of Solaris, tar_filename is [Link].
The untarred files appear in the temporary directory.
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
58 Chapter 3 Installation on UNIX
4 To run the installation script, enter ksh [Link] from the
platform directory in the temporary directory, where platform
is either: solaris, hp11, aix, or linux.
5 To complete installation, follow Step 3 through Step 12 in
“Installing from a CD” on page 52.
Testing Your Driver Installation
For basic information about connecting and testing your
DataDirect Connect for ODBC drivers immediately after
installation, see Chapter 1 “Quick Start Connect” in the
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Reference.
Configuring Drivers and Data Sources
Before you can use an installed driver, you must configure a data
source for the driver. A data source consists of a data source
name, driver location, and optional driver information in the
system information file ([Link]). See the appropriate driver
chapter in the DataDirect Connect for ODBC Reference.
NOTE: Not all drivers and not all supported databases are
available on UNIX platform versions.

4 Installing and Viewing Online
Books
The DataDirect CD and the DataDirect Technologies Web site
provide online books for the DataDirect Product Series. In
addition, they provide Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is required
to view the online books.
Most of the DataDirect product installers allow you to install the
online books along with the product. In this case, the books are
installed in the product’s installation directory in a subdirectory
named books. To install the books when installing the product,
remember to select the Online Books component.
This chapter explains how to:
■ Install the online books without using a product installer
■ View the online books
■ Customize the online books
■ Install Acrobat Reader from the CD
NOTE: Instructions for downloading the online books and
Acrobat Reader from the Web are provided on the DataDirect
Technologies Web site:
[Link]
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
60 Chapter 4 Installing and Viewing Online Books
About DataDirect’s Online Books
You can view the online books from the CD or install them to a
local or network location. You must view the online books using
Acrobat Reader 4.x, or later, licensed from Adobe Systems. The
DataDirect CD includes Acrobat Reader 6.x with Search for
Windows, and Acrobat Reader 4.x with Search for UNIX (except
that the Linux version of Acrobat Reader 4.x does not include the
search capability).
You can print the online books to create high-quality, hard-copy
books. While viewing an online book in Acrobat Reader, select
File / Print to print the entire file (book), the current page, or a
range of pages.
Installing the Online Books
If you want to install the online books without using a product
installer, you must maintain the same directory structure that is
on the CD. You can install all the online books or specific ones:
■ To install all product books, copy the entire \books directory
to your local or network drive.
■ To install a specific set of books, copy that book’s directory
structure (beneath the \books directory) to your local or
network drive. For example, to install the DataDirect Connect
for ODBC books, you would copy the entire odbc directory
beneath the books directory (\books\odbc).
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Viewing the Online Books 61
Viewing the Online Books
To help you navigate through a DataDirect product’s online
books, an Acrobat file, called [Link], is provided. This file lists
each online book provided for a product. We recommend that
you open this file first and, from this file, open the book you
want to view.
If you want to keep the [Link] file open until you choose to
close it, go to the Acrobat Reader menu bar and select File /
Preferences / General. Clear the check box for the Open
Cross-Document Links in Same Window option.
NOTE: If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed, you
must install it before you can view the books. See ”Installing
Acrobat Reader” on page 66 for details.
To view the online books:
1 Start Acrobat Reader in one of the following ways:
■ For Windows, click Start on the Taskbar and select
Programs. Select the Adobe Acrobat folder that was
created during the installation of the Acrobat Reader,
and click the Acrobat Reader icon.
■ For UNIX, you can start the Reader from the command
line by using its launch script:
• If the launch script directory is in the search path set by
the PATH environment variable, type the following to
start Acrobat Reader:
% acroread
• If the launch script directory is not set in the PATH
environment variable, type:
% /acrobatreaderinstalldir/bin/acroread
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
62 Chapter 4 Installing and Viewing Online Books
2 On the Acrobat Reader menu bar, select File / Open, and
choose the path where the [Link] file resides. For
example, for DataDirect Connect for ODBC:
D:\Program Files\DataDirect\books\odbc\[Link]
3 Click Open.
While viewing the online books, you can use hypertext links,
perform text searches, and use bookmarks.
Using Hypertext Links
Cross-reference links within online books allow you to jump to
related topics and other books within a product’s documentation
set. These links are displayed in blue and allow you to jump to a
cross reference with a single click of the mouse. Some links take
you to a URL on the DataDirect Technologies World Wide Web
site (if you have an HTML browser installed on your computer).
The page numbers in the table of contents and index are also
hypertext links.
Performing Text Searches
With Acrobat Reader with Search, you can perform full-text,
boolean searches across all of a product’s online books. You type
a query and Acrobat Reader displays the matching text. To
perform a full-text search across books, you must use the Edit /
Search command (not the Edit / Find command).
NOTE: If you will be performing searches across online books on
the CD over a non-UNIX network, you must explicitly map to the
network drive that contains the CD to enable the Search tool.
The search indexes for DataDirect online books were created
with the word stemming search option. This option finds words
that share a stem with a search word. For example, if you search
DataDirect Connect for ODBC Installation Guide
Customizing the Online Books 63
for “programming,” the Reader will also find “program” and
“programs.” The search indexes were not created using the
Sounds Like and Case Sensitive options. Therefore, you cannot
use these options when searching online books. Finally, numbers
are not included in the search index and will not be found by a
search.
Using Bookmarks
All of the online books contain predefined bookmarks that
make it easy for you to quickly jump to a specific topic. By
default, the bookmarks are displayed to the left of each online
book. For more information about using Acrobat Reader, refer
to the online help for the product.
Customizing the Online Books
If you have Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or higher, you can customize the
online books to reflect information specific to your work
environment. For example:
■ Notes. You can embed notes within an online book to help
identify important procedures or helpful hints specific to
your organization. A note appears in the online books as a
note icon; double-click the icon to view the embedded note
text.
■ Bookmarks. You can also add customized bookmarks to an
online book to help you find topics even faster. Bookmarks
can be used to jump to topics within a book, or to other PDF
files.
For specific instructions on how to customize a book, refer to the
Acrobat documentation.

CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using
the HP-UX tool sam. When installation is complete,
unmount the CD-ROM by entering:
# /usr/sbin/pfs_umount /cdrom
For example, if the device name for your CD-ROM
drive is /dev/rdsk/c0t4d0, and you want to mount it
over the directory /cdrom, you would enter the
following command:
# pfs_mount -o xlat=unix /dev/rdsk/c0t4d0 /cdrom
• For IBM-AIX, enter:
# mount -r -v cdrfs /dev/deviceName /cdrom
where deviceName is the device name assigned to your
CD-ROM drive. The device name can be found using
the AIX tool smit.
• For Linux, enter:
# mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/deviceName /mnt/cdrom
where deviceName is the device name assigned to your
