WORKSHEET ON SOME BASIC CONCEPTS

1. An organic compound on analysis gave the following percentage composition:
C = 57.8%, H = 3.6% and the rest is oxygen. The vapour density of the compound was found to be 83.
Find the molecular formula of the compound. [Ans. C8H6O4]

2. Butyric acid contains only C, H and O. A 4.24 mg of sample of butyric acid is completely burnt. It gives
8.45 mg of carbon dioxide and 3.46 mg of water. What is the percentage of each element in butyric
acid? The molecular mass of butyric acid is determined by experiment as 88 amu. What is its molecular
formula? [Ans. C4H8O2]

3. Calculate (a) molality (b) molarity and (c) mole fraction of KI if the density of 20% (mass/mass)
aqueous KI solution is 1.202 g mL-1. [Ans. 1.50 m, 1.45 M, 0.0263]

4.3 g of H2 react with 29 g O2 to yield H2O.

i) What is the limiting reagent?
ii) Calculate the maximum amount of water that can be formed.
iii) Calculate the amount of one of the reactants which remains unreacted.

5. 1.84 g of a mixture of CaCO3 and MgCO3 is strongly heated till no further loss in mass takes
place. The residue is found to weigh 0.96 g. Calculate the percentage of each component in the
mixture. [Ans. 54.35%; 45.65%]

6. A sample of pure sodium carbonate 0.318 g is dissolved in water and titrated with HCl
solution. A volume of 60 mL is required to reach the Methyl orange end point. Calculate the
molarity of the acid. [Ans. 0.1]

7. A gaseous hydrocarbon gives upon combustion 0.72 g of water and 3.08 g of CO 2. Determine
empirical formula of hydrocarbon. [Ans. C7H8]

8. In an organic compound of molar mass 108 g moL-1; C, H & N atoms are present in 9 : 1 : 3.5
by weight. Determine molecular formula. [Ans. C6H8N2]

9. What would be the weight of slaked lime required to decompose 8 g of ammonium chloride?
[Ans. 5.53 g]

10. The sulphate of metal M contains 9.87% of M. The sulphate is isomorphous with ZnSO 4.
7H2O. Determine atomic weight of M. [Ans. 24.3]

11. Determine total number of electrons in 18 mL of water (density of water is 1 g mL -1).

12. From 200 mg of CO2, 1021 molecules are removed. How many g and mole of CO2 are left?

13. The dot at the end of this sentence has a mass of about one microgram. Assuming that
black stuff is carbon, calculate approximate atoms of carbon needed to make such a dot.

14. Calculate the number of atoms of oxygen present in 88 g CO2. What would be the weight of
CO having the same number of oxygen atoms? [Ans. 112 g]
15. Haemoglobin contains 0.25% iron by weight. The molecular weight of Haemoglobin is
89600. Calculate the number of iron atom per molecule of Haemoglobin. [Ans. 4]

16. The reaction, 2C + O2  2CO, is carried out by taking 24 g of carbon and 96 g O2.
a) Which reactant is left in excess?
b) How much of it is left?
c) How many mole of CO are formed?
d) How many gram of other reactant should be taken so that nothing is left at the end of
reaction?

17. Mole fraction of I2 in C6H6 is 0.2. Calculate the molality of I2 in C6H6. [Ans. 3.20]

18. Calculate the molality of 1 L solution of 93% H2SO4 by volume. The density of solution is 1.84
g mL-1. [Ans. 10.42]
