1. Slope of L1 = − =1
(−1)
Slope of L2 = 1
∴ Slope of L1 = slope of L2
(−1)
y-intercept of L1 = − = –1
(−1)
y-intercept of L2 = 1
∴ y-intercept of L1  y-intercept of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have no points of intersection.

1
2. Slope of L1 = −
3
The slope of L2 is undefined.
∴ Slope of L1  slope of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have one point of intersection.

5 5
3. Slope of L1 = − =
(−7) 7
7
Slope of L2 = −
5
∴ Slope of L1  slope of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have one point of intersection.

4. Rewrite the equation of L1 as 12x – 9y – 18 = 0.

Rewrite the equation of L2 as 4x – 3y – 6 = 0.
12 4
Slope of L1 = − =
(−9) 3
4 4
Slope of L2 = − =
(−3) 3
∴ Slope of L1 = slope of L2
(−18)
y-intercept of L1 = − = −2
(−9)
(−6)
y-intercept of L2 = − = –2
(−3)
∴ y-intercept of L1 = y-intercept of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have an infinite number of points of
intersection.
5. Rewrite the equation of L1 as 2x + 3y + 6 = 0.
2 5
Rewrite the equation of L2 as y = − x + .
3 6
2
Slope of L1 = −
3
2
Slope of L2 = −
3
∴ Slope of L1 = slope of L2
6
y-intercept of L1 = − = –2
3
5
y-intercept of L2 =
6
∴ y-intercept of L1  y-intercept of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have no points of intersection.

6. Rewrite the equation of L2 as 3x – 9y + 45 = 0.

1 1
Slope of L1 = − =
(−3) 3
3 1
Slope of L2 = − =
(− 9) 3
∴ Slope of L1 = slope of L2
15
y-intercept of L1 = − =5
(−3)
45
y-intercept of L2 = − =5
(−9)
∴ y-intercept of L1 = y-intercept of L2
∴ L1 and L2 have an infinite number of points of
intersection.

7. L1: 2x + y – 5 = 0 .......... (1)

L2: x = y + 1 .......... (2)
Put (2) into (1).
2(y + 1) + y – 5 = 0
2y + 2 + y – 5 = 0
3y – 3 = 0
y=1
Put y = 1 into (2).
x=1+1
=2
∴ The coordinates of the point of intersection are (2, 1).
8. L1: –x + 3y + 9 = 0 .......... (1)
L2: y = –3 .......... (2)
Put (2) into (1).
–x + 3(–3) + 9 = 0
x=0
∴ The coordinates of the point of intersection are
(0, –3).

9. L1: 6x – 5y = –12 .......... (1)

L2: x + 2y = 15 .......... (2)
From (2),
x = 15 – 2y .......... (3)
Put (3) into (1).
6(15 – 2y) – 5y = –12
90 – 12y – 5y = –12
102 – 17y = 0
y=6
Put y = 6 into (3).
x = 15 – 2(6)
=3
∴ The coordinates of the point of intersection are (3, 6).

10. L1: 2x + 3y + 7 = 0 .......... (1)

L2: 3x – y + 5 = 0 .......... (2)
(2) × 3:
9x – 3y + 15 = 0 .......... (3)
(1) + (3):
11x + 22 = 0
x = –2
Put x = –2 into (2).
3(–2) – y + 5 = 0
y = –1
∴ The coordinates of the point of intersection are
(–2, –1).
