UNIT 1 – INTEGRATION CONCEPTS
1.4. The Definite Integral
In this section, we are going to focus on how to evaluate definite integrals. To do this, we need
the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus which says that suppose ( ) is a continuous function
on the closed interval [ ]and also, suppose that ( ) is any antiderivative for ( ), then,
∫ ( ) ( )| ( ) ( )
Properties of Definite Integral
1. If ( ) and ( ) are integrable on [ ], then the function ( ) ( ) is integrable on
[ ], and ∫ [ ( ) ( )] ∫ ( ) ∫ ( ) .
2. If ( ) is integrable on the three closed intervals determined by then:
∫ ( ) ∫ ( ) ∫ ( )
This property states that the interval of integration may be broken up into any
number of sub-intervals, and integration is carried out over each sub-interval
separately.
∫ ( ) ∫ ( )
This states that if the limits of integration are interchanged, the sign of the
integral is interchanged also.
∫ ( )
