Module Wise Questions

Module 1

1) Explain the difference between mean, median, mode, range, variance, and standard deviation
with a simple example.
2) Briefly describe methods for exploring data distribution such as boxplot, frequency table,
histogram, and density plot with suitable examples.
3) Find mean, variance, and standard deviation for the following grouped data.

Scores 40-45 34-39 28-33 22-27 16-21 10-15

Frequency 3 1 4 5 2 5
4) What is scatter plot? How is it used to study the relationship between two variables?
5) Find mean, median, mode and draw boxplot and also find out quartile Q1, Q2, Q3 and inter
quartile range.
Age = 13, 15, 16, 16, 19, 20, 20, 21, 22, 22, 25, 25, 25, 25, 30, 33, 33, 35, 35, 35, 35, 36, 40, 45,
46, 57, 70.
6) Explain the concept of a correlation coefficient.

Module 2

1) Define Sampling? Explain the need for sampling.

2) Name any 5 kinds of sampling. Explain them with examples.
3) Define Sample Statistic and Sampling distribution with examples?
4) Explain necessity of sampling distribution, standard error and central limit theorem
5) Define point estimate, interval estimate and confidence interval
6) Explain normal distribution, standard normal distribution, normal and standard normal curves.
7) What is Random Sampling? Explain with an example how sampling bias can occur.
8) Compare and contrast the following distributions with their applications
a. Normal
b. Student’s t
c. Chi – square
d. F – distribution
e. Normal distribution
9) A call centre receives an average of 4 calls per minute. Using the Poisson distribution, find the
probability that in a given minute:
a. Exactly 2 calls are received.
b. More than 4 calls are received.
10) Define A/B testing. Explain the steps involved in designing and conducting an A/B testing with a
suitable example from e-commerce.
11) a. A die is rolled 60 times and the outcomes are recorded as follows:

Face 1 2 3 4 5 6
Frequency 8 10 9 12 11 10
Test at the 5% significance level whether the die is fair using Chisquare test. The Critical value at
5% level = 11.07
b. A manufacturer claims that the average life of a battery is 300 hours. A sample of 9 batteries
has the following lifetimes (in hours):
290, 310, 295, 280, 300, 310, 285, 295, 305
Test at the 5% significance level if the claim is true using t-test. Critical value at 5% level (two-
tailed) = 2.306.
12) Explain the bootstrap method in detail. How does it help in statistical inference?
