In today’s presentation I shall be discussing private and state schools, which is a controversial
topic in Spain since there are people who believe private schools should be banned. I,
however, believe education must be accessible and affordable for all, whilst not forsaking
freedom of choice.
I have divided my topic into four parts. In the first, I’ll set out some arguments in favour of
private schools. In the next part, I’ll delve into the advantages and disadvantages regarding
state schools. They, I'll focus on society’s opinions, concluding with my opinion.
Let’s kick start with the arguments in favour of private schools. According to some educational
experts, private schools usually have smaller class sizes, allowing for more personal attention
from teachers, which can be helpful for students to understand every subject. As well, private
schools offer more resources, such as advanced technology and diverse extracurricular
activities to make the most out of their learning process, creating well-rounded individuals.
Finally, in private schools the relationships between school staff, families and students can be
more unified, letting everyone feel their school is their safe place, a second home.
The purpose of the following part is to analyse the advantages and disadvantages in respect of
state schools. By studying both sides of the coin, we can get a wide variety of options in order
to choose the best schooling option for everyone. In presenting these advantages and
disadvantages, I would like to highlight the different challenges that state schools have to deal
with, to be able to offer educational opportunities for all, validating its strengths while also
noting areas for improvement. Through this analysis, I aim to develop a thoughtful discussion
about education and raise awareness of the various experiences and obstacles that students in
state schools can face.
On the one hand, some parents say that state schools are typically more diverse, exposing
students to a variety of cultures and perspectives, as a result, enriching the learning
experience. Additionally, they are often more accessible, making it easier to find a school close
to home. Moreover, having a larger number of students creates plenty of opportunities for
making new friends. Furthermore, regarding the free nature of state schools, it means that
every single person can have access to quality education regardless of their socioeconomic
status. According to statistics, having a large number of students can also be a significant
inconvenience due to the fact that state schools can sometimes be overcrowded, resulting in
larger class sizes and less individual attention from teachers. Additionally, budget limitations
often lead to fewer resources and opportunities compared to private schools. Therefore, while
state schools have their advantages, it is crucial to consider these disadvantages before making
a decision as to where to send your children.
And let's proceed to the Society's views on both private and state schools, which is interesting.
To begin with, private schools are often regarded as these elite institutions only the rich
children attend. There's this idea that they're both posh and exclusive due to the fees charged.
On the flip side, state schools are often considered more down-to-earth, welcoming a wider
range of students from different backgrounds which is always enriching.
To sum up, having considered what has been said before, personally, I believe private schools
should exist for the options they provide and freedom of choice, but it's crucial to speak up
about disparities in funding and resources to ensure quality education for all. As a student, I
believe education should be a right, not a privilege, and we should work together in order to
support and improve state schools for impartial learning opportunities for all. Thank you for
listening to me and is there anything you would like to discuss?
