FACULTY : SCG ASSIGNMENT #4 PHY 107

DATE OF SUBMISSION: 5 AUGUST 2025 TOTAL POINTS : 20

Instructions:

1. Write clearly with a pen.

2. Show step-by-step calculations.
3. Upload the answer script to Canvas as PDF.
4. No late submission will be accepted.

#1. [5 points] A pendulum of length 0.8 m and mass 1.2 kg is released from rest when the cord
makes an angle of 20° with the vertical. Use the conservation of mechanical energy to calculate
the sphere's speed when it is at its lowest point.

#2. [5 points] A block of mass 𝑚1 = 4.2 𝑘𝑔 initially moving to the right with a speed of 3.8 𝑚/𝑠
on a frictionless horizontal track collides with a spring attached to a second block of mass
𝑚2 = 2.5 𝑘𝑔 initially moving to the left with a speed of 3 𝑚/𝑠, as shown the following figure.
The spring constant is 1050 𝑁/𝑚. Find the velocity of block 1 and the compression in the
spring at the instant block 2 is at rest.

#3. A hoop of diameter 1 𝑚 and mass 800 𝑔 rotates through its center at an angular speed of
200 𝑅𝑃𝑀. It then undergoes an angular acceleration and reaches 750 RPM after completing
1450 revolutions.

(a) [2 points] Find the angular acceleration of the hoop.

(b) [1 point] How long does it take to increase the angular speed from 200 RPM to 750 RPM?
(c) [2 points] Calculate the change in the rotational kinetic energy of the hoop.

#4. A solid cylinder of radius 6 cm and mass 600 g starting from rest rolls down a frictionless
inclined plane that makes an angle of 30° with the horizontal. The cylinder travels a distance
of 1.5 𝑚 before hitting the ground.
(a) [3 points] Find the translational speed of the center of mass of the cylinder when it hits
the ground.
(b) [2 points] Repeat the calculation for a hollow cylinder of the same radius and mass.
