Grade 7 TLE – Agriculture

Career and Business Opportunities in Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the oldest and most important industries in the world. It provides food, raw
materials, and livelihood for millions of people. In the Philippines, agriculture remains a strong
foundation of our economy, especially in rural areas.

But agriculture is not only about farming—it also offers many career paths (jobs you can apply
for) and business opportunities (ways to earn through entrepreneurship).

Careers in Agriculture

1. Agriculturist – A professional in the field of agriculture, encompassing the science,

practice, and management of farming and agribusiness. They develop and implement
strategies for improving agricultural practices, ensuring sustainable resource
management, and enhancing crop and livestock production. Agriculturists may also work
in research, extension services, or agribusiness management.
2. Farm Technician – Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, or overhauls farm machinery and
vehicles. They also evaluate and improve production performance, provide training on
systems and processes, and are typically graduates of Veterinary Medicine or BS in
Agriculture.

More specifically, a Farm Technician's duties may include:

• Diagnosing and repairing farm equipment:
This includes tractors, harvesters, dairy equipment, and irrigation systems.
• Evaluating production performance:
They analyze data and work with partners to develop action plans for
improvement.
• Providing training:
Farm technicians educate farm staff on various processes, such as house
preparation, brooding, growing, harvesting, and documentation.
• Working with various agricultural technologies:
This could involve using technology for tasks like crop monitoring, pest control,
or irrigation management.
• Supervising and training other workers:
In some cases, they may oversee unskilled workers involved in planting,
harvesting, or equipment operation.

3. Farm Owner – An individual or entity that holds the legal title to a farm and its land,
and who is responsible for the overall management and operations of the farm. This can
include making decisions about what to plant, when to harvest, and how to manage
livestock. The farm owner may also be the one who works the land, or they may hire
others to do so.

• Ownership:
A farm owner has legal title to the land and property associated with the farm.
• Management:
They are responsible for the overall direction and operation of the farm, including
making decisions about crops, livestock, and other agricultural activities.
• Labor:
A farm owner may be involved in the day-to-day labor of farming or may hire
farmhands, managers, or other workers to carry out the work according to the Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
• Varied Roles:
The term "farm owner" can encompass a range of roles, from a smallholder who
personally works the land to a large-scale operator who manages a team of
employees according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Business Opportunities in Agriculture
