Example 5) Solve sin x + √2 = - sin x

Solution:
Begin by isolating sin x on one side of the equation.
sin x + √2 = - sin x Write the original equation
sin x + sin x = -√2 Transpose – sin x to the left side..
2 sin x = -√2 Combine like terms
−√𝟐
sin x = Divide each side by 2

Example 6) Solve cos² x + cos x – 2 = 0
Solution:
Use factoring technique.

cos² x + cos x – 2 = 0
(cos x + 2) (cos x -1) = 0
cos x + 2 = 0 or cos x – 1 = 0
cos x = -2 or cos x = 1

cos x = -2 has no solution. The solution to cos x = 1 is 0 and 2𝜋. Therefore, the
solution to the given equation is {𝒙|𝒙 = 𝟎, 𝟐𝝅 }. ans.
