GIS Data Processing Basics Guide

The document provides an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), focusing on data types such as raster and vector data, and their applications in decision-making. It outlines the process of structuring data through folder creation, linking data to GIS environments, and creating shapefiles in ArcGIS. Additionally, it includes steps for importing data from various sources, such as DIVA GIS and Bhuvan, and assigns tasks for creating maps and accounts on relevant platforms.

TYPES OF DATA

RASTER | VECTOR
Raster data is represented by a grid of Vector data, on the other hand, is
pixels, where each pixel has a value that represented by points, lines, and
represents some aspect of the polygons, and is used to represent
landscape, such as elevation or color. features such as buildings or rivers.
VECTOR DATA
Vector data provide a way to represent real world features within the GIS environment. Vector data structures represent
specific features on the Earth’s surface, and assign attributes to those features. Vectors are composed of discrete
geometric locations (x, y values) known as vertices that define the shape of the spatial object.

5. The same process can be repeated vice versa (KML to layer)

THE VICE VERSA CAN BE DONE (GOOGLE EARTH MAP CAN BE IMPORTED IN ARCGIS) USING “KML TO LAYER” Command. The same has
been demonstrated in the class. The above steps is to import a layer as kml (google earth file).
