1. Children Displaced by Conflict in Kachin State
In 2018, Lahtaw Seng Hkawn and her three children fled their village in Injangyang due to
armed conflict. With no time to gather belongings, they joined thousands of internally displaced
families living in camps. Her story reflects the urgent need for child protection, education, and
trauma support in conflict zones.
2. Thazin Legal Aid Group – Defending Child Rights in Rakhine
This women-led legal team in Sittwe advocates for children and youth facing abuse, neglect, and
legal injustice. They’ve handled cases involving child sexual abuse, juvenile detention, and
denial of education. Their work shows how local legal support can empower vulnerable children
and uphold justice.
3. Children Killed in Airstrikes (2024)
In September 2024, at least 10 children were killed in a series of airstrikes across Shan, Chin,
and Magway regions. These tragedies underscore the devastating impact of armed conflict on
children and the urgent need for humanitarian protection.
4. Child Labor and Education Gaps
According to the 2014 census, over 1.6 million children aged 10–18 were working, and 4.4
million children aged 5–18 were not attending school. These figures highlight systemic
challenges in enforcing child labor laws and ensuring access to education.
5. Art Contest for Child Rights Awareness
In 2023, UNICEF and the EU in Myanmar organized a national art contest for children aged 9–
16 to express their dreams and rights through art. This initiative celebrated children’s voices and
creativity while raising awareness about human rights.
