Understanding Word Formation Processes

The document discusses the word formation process, which is the creation of new words from existing ones, and contrasts it with semantic change. It outlines various types of word formation, including word-building (derivation, compounding, blending), abbreviated forms (clipping, acronyms), other methods (onomatopoeia, coinage, borrowing), and modification of existing words (conversion, back formation). The conclusion emphasizes the significance of understanding how new words are formed in language.

Word Formatin Process

A. Definiton.
Word as a part of language has important rule in forming a language.
People always use it to build a sentence, but they don’t know where do actually
those millions words come from. People as the user of language sometimes don’t
think about how a language is formed. There are millions words now used by
people. Everytime people get more and more new words unless they know the
way it happens. The meaning of the new word form is influenced by the process
of forming a word. This process is usually called word formation process.
Word formation is the creation of a new word. Word formation is
sometimes contrasted with semantic change, which is a change in a single word's
meaning. Word-formation process is a way of forming new words or terms from
the use of old words.
Change or making a new word. There are, of course, numerous word
formation processes that do not arouse any controversies and are very similar in
the majority of languages.
B. Types of Word Formation
1. Word – Building
In this section we shall deal with vocabulary extension by building up in
various ways from a free form.
a). Derivation
This is a process (sometimes called affixation) of word
extension by adding prefixes or suffixes and so increasing the
power of the word root.
They are very easy to recognise and examples of prefixes
and suffixes abound in number and variety in normal everyday use.
1). Prefixes
Prefixes are affixes before.
Example : un- usual, mis – pronounce, dis – respect.
2). Suffixes.

Affixes in before and after word.
Example : dis – loyal – ty, un – erring – ly.
b). Compounding
The process of putting words together to build a new one
that ‘does not denote two things, but one’ and that is ‘pronounced
as one unit.
Example :

Skydiving = sky + diving (Noun and Verb)
c). Blending.
A blending is a combination of two or more words to create
a new one, usually by taking the beginning of the other word and
the end of the other one.
Example :
Brunch = breakfast + lunch
Motel = motor + hotel
Smog = smoke + fog
2. Abbreviated Forms
A shortened form of a word or phrase.
a). Simple shortenings (Clipping)
Clipping is the word formation process which consists in
the reduction of a word to one of its parts (Marchand: 1969).

consists of the following types:
1). Back clipping : Gas (Gasoline)
2). Fore-clipping : Phone (Telephone)

etc.

of resumes and cover letters.
