INTRODUCTION

A Tesla Coil is a type of resonant transformer

circuit invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891.
It is designed to produce high-voltage, low-
current, high-frequency alternating current (AC)
electricity.
The Tesla coil demonstrates principles of
electromagnetic induction, resonance, and
wireless power transmission.
Concept:
A Tesla Coil is a type of resonant transformer circuit that
generates high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating
current (AC). It works by transferring energy from one coil to
another through the principle of electromagnetic induction.

Comparison:
Unlike regular transformers that use an iron core, the Tesla Coil
uses an air core, which allows it to operate at very high
frequencies. Traditional transformers are designed for stable
voltage transmission, while Tesla Coils are designed to produce
visible electrical discharges and demonstrate resonance
phenomena.
PRINCIPLE
PRINCIPLE
Works on the principle of electromagnetic
induction and resonance.

Energy is transferred from the primary coil to

the secondary coil through an oscillating
magnetic field.
Electromagnetic Induction:
According to Faraday’s Law, a changing
magnetic field induces a current in a
nearby coil. In a Tesla Coil, alternating
current in the primary coil creates a
varying magnetic field, which induces a
voltage in the secondary coil.

Resonance:
When both coils (primary and secondary) are tuned to the same
resonant frequency, energy transfer becomes maximum. This
resonance amplifies voltage to extreme levels, often reaching
hundreds of thousands of volts.

AC Mains Supply – Provides the alternating current power source.
High Voltage Transformer – Steps up the input voltage to a high
voltage required to charge the capacitor.
High Voltage Capacitor – Stores electrical energy and releases it in
pulses.
Spark Gap – Acts as a switch that discharges the capacitor
suddenly, creating oscillations in the circuit.
Primary Coil – A few turns of thick wire that generates a magnetic
field when current oscillates through it.
Secondary Coil – Many turns of fine wire; it receives energy
through induction and produces very high voltage.
Torus (Top Load) – A metal ring at the top of the secondary coil
that stores charge and releases it as electric arcs.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Plastic Pipe:
2.5 cm thick and 9–10 cm long — used as the coil base to wrap copper
wire around.
Insulated Copper Wire (26–30 gauge):
Used to make the secondary coil that produces high voltage.
Cardboard:
Acts as the base for mounting the coil and circuit.
Resistor (22 kΩ or 2×10 kΩ):
Controls current flow to the base of the transistor.
On/Off Switch:
Lets you control power to the Tesla coil circuit.
9V Battery:
Serves as the power source for the entire setup.
Battery Connector:
Connects the battery to the circuit securely.
Small Wire Piece:
Used for the primary coil — 2 turns around the secondary coil to
create feedback.
Aluminum Foil:
Wrapped around a ball to make the top load (toroid) that spreads
charge.
Small Ball:
Serves as the form for shaping the aluminum foil into the top
electrode.
Power Input:
WORKING
WORKING
The AC supply energizes the transformer, which
increases voltage to several thousand volts.

Charging the Capacitor:

The high-voltage transformer charges the capacitor
connected across the spark gap.

Discharge through Spark Gap:

Once the voltage is high enough, the spark gap
conducts, causing the capacitor to discharge
suddenly through the primary coil
Oscillations Form:
This discharge creates oscillating currents in the primary coil circuit at a
high frequency.

Induction in Secondary Coil:

These oscillations create a changing magnetic field that induces an even
higher voltage in the secondary coil.

Output at the Torus:

The voltage at the top terminal (toroid) becomes high enough to ionize
air, producing electric sparks that resemble lightning.

PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS
Tesla Coils generate extremely high voltages that
can be dangerous or fatal.
If you plan to build a small working model, ensure:
Use low power (9V–12V DC input) and small
circuits (e.g., using a transistor like 2N2222 or
IRF540N).
Do not use mains voltage unless supervised by a
qualified person.
Keep flammable materials away.

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
The Tesla Coil shows the power of resonance and electromagnetic induction.

Though not used for modern power transmission, it laid the foundation for
today’s wireless technologies.

It remains one of the most fascinating inventions demonstrating the beauty

of physics and electricity.

Though it’s not practical for large-scale power delivery, it remains a

foundation for modern wireless technologies such as inductive charging, Wi-
Fi power transfer, and advanced communication systems.
