slam, the religion followed by Muslims, is a monotheistic faith based on the teachings revealed to the
Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. The word Islam means "submission to the will of God," and
Muslim means "one who submits". The central text of Islam is the Qur'an, believed to be the verbatim
word of God (Allah), and its core practices are guided by the Five Pillars.
Key beliefs

Muslims hold six core articles of faith:

● Belief in one God (Allah): Muslims believe in a single, all-powerful, and all-knowing God who is
the creator and sustainer of the universe. He is unique, without gender or partners, and is the
sole being worthy of worship.
● Belief in angels: Angels are beings created by God to carry out His commands. The angel
Gabriel (Jibril) is particularly important, as he is believed to have delivered the revelations to
Muhammad.
● Belief in divine books: Muslims believe that God revealed holy scriptures to various prophets
throughout history, including the Torah (to Moses), the Psalms (to David), and the Gospel (to
Jesus). They hold that the Qur'an is the final, unaltered, and complete revelation.
● Belief in prophets: Islam recognizes a series of prophets sent by God to guide humanity. These
include figures like Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Muslims believe that Muhammad was
the final prophet in this lineage.
● Belief in the Day of Judgment: At the end of time, all humanity will be resurrected and judged
by God for their deeds. The righteous will be rewarded with eternal life in paradise (Jannah),
and the wicked will face punishment in hell (Jahannam).
● Belief in divine decree: This means that everything that happens, both good and bad, has been
willed by God. This belief is often expressed with the phrase "Insha'Allah" ("if God wills it").

The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars are the fundamental practices that guide a Muslim's daily life.

● Shahada (Declaration of Faith): The testimony that "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad
is His messenger." Reciting this sincerely is the first step to becoming a Muslim.
● Salat (Prayer): Muslims perform five ritual prayers each day facing the Kaaba in Mecca. This
practice establishes a direct link between the believer and God.
● Zakat (Charity): This is the practice of giving a portion of one's wealth (typically 2.5%) to the
poor and needy each year.
● Sawm (Fasting): During the Islamic month of Ramadan, healthy adult Muslims fast from dawn
until sunset. The purpose is to foster self-discipline and empathy for the less fortunate.
● Hajj (Pilgrimage): All Muslims who are physically and financially able are expected to make a
pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.

Major holy sites

● Mecca, Saudi Arabia: The holiest city in Islam, where the Prophet Muhammad was born. It is
home to the Kaaba, the cubical structure towards which Muslims pray.
● Medina, Saudi Arabia: This city is where Muhammad and his followers emigrated in 622 CE. It
is home to the Prophet's Mosque.
● Jerusalem: Another holy city in Islam, with the Al-Aqsa mosque being a significant pilgrimage
site.

Major branches

The two largest branches of Islam are Sunni and Shia, which emerged from a historical disagreement
over who should succeed Muhammad as the leader of the Muslim community.

● Sunni Islam: Comprises the majority of Muslims (about 85–90%) and accepts the first four
caliphs as the rightful successors to Muhammad.
● Shia Islam: Accounts for 10–15% of Muslims and believes that leadership should have passed
to Muhammad's family, specifically his son-in-law, Ali.

Muslim population

Islam is the second-largest and fastest-growing religion in the world, with over 2 billion followers. The
countries with the largest Muslim populations are Indonesia and India.

Other notable aspects

● Qur'an and Sunnah: The Qur'an is the central holy text, while the Sunnah (the record of
Muhammad's words and deeds) is used to help interpret it and provide guidance.
● Jihad: This term means "struggle" and is often misunderstood. It refers to both the internal
struggle to live a righteous life and, less commonly today, a military struggle to defend the
faith.
● Sharia Law: This faith-based code of conduct provides guidance on how Muslims should live
and is rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
