Earth Block Manufacturing Techniques

The document analyzes the methods of brick manufacturing, highlighting the predominance of artisanal techniques and the associated challenges. It describes the steps in the production of earth blocks, the importance of compaction for the strength of the blocks, as well as the optimal dimensions of bricks according to standards. Finally, it presents the technological choices for lifting and compression systems in the brick production process.

The bricks in a building

There are different shapes, sizes, components...

Local manufacturing methods remain mostly artisanal with a lack of knowledge of

properties of construction materials.

The artisanal manufacturing method is very uncomfortable and requires significant effort.
bricking during the different operations.

There are industrial brick manufacturing companies run by entrepreneurs meeting the standards and
to the desired requirements. Most are made by imported machines with standards and
unknown manufacturing techniques.

Manufacturing of earth blocks

Starting from a given land, the operations for implementation will be as follows:

sieving, to have the desired grain size;

the addition of water, cement or lime and the mixing of the relatively homogeneous mixture in the
molds to obtain soil blocks;
finally the compaction of the relatively homogeneous mixture in the molds to obtain blocks of
earth
This compaction will be done in 3 stages:

Filling: the earth must not contain gravel (diameter greater than 5mm);

Compaction: the quality of the compaction depends on the quality of the soil in the mold;

Unmolding: the freshly compacted block must be handled with care.

Need to compact the stabilized earth

Compaction is one of the key operations for achieving good strengths.

Compacting the soil means ensuring that it holds the maximum number of points.
contact so that there are only minimal gaps between them, so that all the
particles "so well interlocked with each other that they can no longer move.

For good manufacturing consistency, the gravel-cement mix should be placed in the
The mold will preferably be ± 50g.

How to compact earth concrete?

To compact soil concrete, one can:

either to exert on the material from repeated shocks due to damage or pounding;
Use mechanical, hydraulic or manual presses.

Optimal dimensions of earth blocks

The dimensions of the blocks depend mainly on the thickness of the wall that we want to achieve:
according to BUREAU VERITAS, 15cm represents an optimum, above that we are led to an expense
Cement input, below the thickness the risk of being too low from a stability perspective.
construction.

A second requirement is to have manageable blocks. In this regard, 15x20x45 represent,

according to BUREAU VERITAS maximum dimensions: the blocks weigh from 26 to 27 kilograms.

Types of bricks:

The solid brick: a brick that has no perforation and whose most common format is
current 6x11x22 cm.

The perforated brick: a brick featuring perforations perpendicular to the laying face.
sum of the sections of the perforations being less than or equal to 50% of the total section, and
width less than 14 cm.
The perforated block: large format brick, allowing for the full raw thickness of the wall to be achieved with
a single element, with perforations perpendicular to the mounting face, whose width is
less than 14 cm, with a height of 30 cm or less and with the largest dimension
does not exceed 60 cm. the sum of the sections of the perforations is less than or equal to 60% of the
total section.

The hollow clay brick (standard NF P 13-301) distinguishes two types of hollow bricks:

Type C: brick with continuous laying faces, intended to be assembled with mortar joints
horizontal contents.

Type R.J: bricks known as "joint-breaking", intended to be assembled with mortar joints.
discontinuous horizontals.
Technological choice of components.

a mold lifting system:

A crank-slider system will be chosen for lifting. The lifting torque will be provided by a
asynchronous motor coupled to the shaft via a belt transmission.

concrete compression system:

It will be ensured by a set of efforts; one will come from the vibration of the mold and the other from the
weight of the compression legs supporting a massive plate.

the support:

It will be secured by a set of bars similar to a port.

-system movement
The machine will be equipped with wheels allowing it to move.

For the bricks, it is carried out according to the following phases:

Kneading and rolling: it is the step of moistening and mixing aimed at adding.
water in the mortar to achieve the sufficient plasticity for extrusion or molding. It's a
key operation as it conditions the drying operations.
Molding: At this stage, the mortar is extruded and molded in a concrete manner.
Drying: it is one of the most fundamental stages of the process, which consists of removing water.
