Part A

Answer All Questions

1 Explain the principle of equilibrium of forces. (3)

2 Define couple and list its characteristics. (3)
3 Compare the equilibrium equations of concurrent forces and non concurrent (3)
forces acting on a plane.
4 A uniform beam AB of length 5m, is placed on two supports at A and B. The
beam carries point loads of 3.5 KN,2.3 KN and 4.5 KN from end A at
(3)
distances of 1.5m,2.5 m and 3.75m respectively. Draw the figure and find the
reactions developed at A and B.
5 Define the terms centroid and moment of Inertia. (3)
6 A force vector is represented by a line AB. The coordinates of point A is
(2,4,3) and B is (1,-5,2). If the magnitude of the force is 20 kN, determine the
(3)
components of the force about three mutually perpendicular axes and the
corresponding angles made by them.
7 A car starts from rest with a constant acceleration of 4 m/s2. Determine the
(3)
distance travelled in the 7th second.
8 Explain D’Alembert’s principle. (3)
9 The armature of an electric motor has angular speed N=1500 rpm at the
instant when power is cut off. If it comes to rest in 5 sec, determine the
(3)
angular acceleration assuming it to be constant. How many complete
revolutions does the armature make during this period?
10 Discuss the general conditions of simple harmonic motion. (3)

Each Question Carries 14 Marks

11 a) The greatest and least resultant of two forces acting on a particle are 35 kN
and 5 kN respectively. If 25 kN is the magnitude of the resultant for given (14)
system of forces, F1 and F2, prove that the forces are at 90°.
b) The resultant of two forces, one of which is double the other is 290 N. If the
direction of the larger force is reversed and the other remains unaltered, the
resultant reduces to 200 N. Determine the magnitude of the forces and the
angle between them.
OR

12 a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the forces acting
on the ring as shown in Figure.

(14)

b) State and prove Varignon’s theorem.

13 a) ABCD is a square, each side being 20 cm and point E is at the centre of the
square. Forces of magnitude 7,8,12,5,9 and 6 KN acts on lines of direction
AB, EC, BC, BD, CA, and DE respectively. Find the magnitude and direction
of the resultant force.
(14)
b) A pull of 100 N is required just to move a certain body up an inclined plane
of angle 15°, the force acting parallel to the plane. If the angle of inclination of
the plane is made 20°, the pull required again parallel to the plane, is found to
be 230 N. Find the weight of the body and the coefficient of friction
OR

14 a) Find the reactions at the supports for the beam shown in figure.

(14)

b) A body of weight 100 N is hauled along a rough horizontal plane by a pull

of 15 N acting at an angle 14° with the horizontal. Find the coefficient of
friction.

figure. All the dimensions are in cm.

17 A cricket ball is thrown by a fielder from a height of 2m at an angle of 30° to

the horizontal with an initial velocity of 20 m/s, hits the wickets at a height of (14)
0.5 m from the ground. How far was the fielder from the wicket?
OR

18 Two masses MA = 10 kg and MB = 20 kg are connected by a bar of negligible

mass and is placed on an inclined plane of inclination of 30°. The mass MB is
below mass MA. Assume coefficient of friction, μA = 0.15 and μB = 0.3. Find (14)

inclination of 30°.

revolutions per minute.

continues to accelerate at this rate for the next 8 s. Thereafter the wheel rotates (14)
with a uniform angular velocity. Find the total time to complete 300
revolutions.

6 kN/m. The body is pulled 60 mm down from its equilibrium position and
then released. Calculate the frequency of oscillation, maximum velocity, and
maximum acceleration, if springs are connected in parallel.
