INTRODUCTION .
This project is titled “Inventory of Birds in a Locality: Scavenger
and Pollinator Birds.”
It focuses on the observation and study of birds commonly found
in our surroundings. Birds play a very important role in nature.
Some birds act as scavengers by cleaning the environment, while
others act as pollinators by helping plants reproduce.
This project helps us understand different types of birds, their
habits, and their importance in maintaining ecological balance. It
also encourages students to observe nature closely and develop
awareness about protecting birds and their habitats.

Birds are one of the most beautiful and important living organisms
on Earth. They are found in almost every environment, such as
forests, villages, cities, wetlands, and gardens. Birds contribute
greatly to maintaining balance in nature. They help control
insects, clean the surroundings, pollinate flowers, and spread
seeds.
By observing birds in our locality, we can understand how they
interact with the environment. This project is based on simple
observation of birds seen daily around homes, parks, and open
areas.
Among the many roles birds play, scavenging and pollination are
very important. Scavenger birds feed on dead animals and waste
materials, keeping the environment clean and preventing the
spread of diseases. Pollinator birds feed on nectar from flowers
and help in transferring pollen from one flower to another.
This project aims to study these two categories of birds in a
nearby locality. It also highlights how human activities affect bird
life and why conservation of birds is necessary for a healthy
ecosystem.

OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to study and prepare an
inventory of scavenger and pollinator birds found in a local area.
Other objectives include observing different bird species,
identifying their physical features, and understanding their food
habits. The project also aims to learn about the ecological
importance of birds and their contribution to the environment.
Through this project, students develop observation skills,
environmental awareness, and respect for nature. It also
encourages conservation of birds and protection of their natural
habitats.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
The materials required for this project are simple and easily
available. A notebook and pen are needed to record observations.
A camera or mobile phone can be used to take pictures of birds
for identification.
Binoculars may help in observing birds from a distance. A bird
identification chart, biology textbook, or educational websites are
useful for confirming bird names.
These materials help in collecting accurate information and
making the project systematic and informative.

STUDY AREA
The study was conducted in a nearby locality such as a residential
area, park, garden, roadside trees, and open grounds. These
places provide food, shelter, and water for birds.
Trees, flowering plants, and open garbage areas attract different
types of birds. Pollinator birds are commonly found near flowering
plants, while scavenger birds are often seen near human
settlements.
The study area represents a typical environment where birds and
humans live close to each other.
Birds were observed during early morning and evening hours, as
these are the most active times for birds. Observations were
made over several days to ensure accuracy.
The size, color, beak shape, feeding habits, and behavior of birds
were noted carefully. Birds were then classified as scavengers or
pollinators based on their food habits.
Information collected was compared with reference books and
online sources to correctly identify each bird species.

SCAVENGER BIRDS OBSERVED
Scavenger birds play an important role in cleaning the
environment. Common scavenger birds observed in the locality
include crow, kite, and vulture.
Crows are black in colour and are commonly seen feeding on
waste food. Kites have broad wings and are often seen flying high
in the sky while searching for food.
Vultures, though rare, are powerful scavengers that feed on dead
animals. These birds help prevent the spread of diseases by
removing decaying matter.

POLLINATOR BIRDS OBSERVED
Pollinator birds help plants reproduce by transferring pollen while
feeding on nectar. Sunbirds are small, colorful birds with long
curved beaks adapted for nectar feeding.
Flowerpeckers are tiny birds that visit flowers and fruits. Bulbuls
are medium-sized birds that feed on nectar, fruits, and insects.
These birds are usually seen near gardens and flowering plants.
Pollinator birds play a vital role in maintaining plant diversity and
food production.

RESULT
The study revealed that the locality supports a variety of bird
species, including both scavengers and pollinators. Scavenger
birds were more common near human settlements and waste
areas.
Pollinator birds were frequently observed near gardens, parks,
and flowering trees. The presence of these birds shows that the
area has suitable food and shelter.
The results highlight the importance of preserving natural
resources to support bird life and maintain ecological balance.

INTERPRETATION
The presence of scavenger and pollinator birds indicates a
healthy and balanced ecosystem. Scavenger birds help in waste
management and cleanliness, while pollinator birds support plant
growth.
A decrease in bird population may indicate pollution,
deforestation, or lack of food. Areas with more trees and flowering
plants attract a greater variety of birds.
Thus, bird diversity reflects the overall environmental condition of
a locality.

DISCUSSION
Human activities greatly affect bird populations. Cutting trees,
using pesticides, and improper waste disposal reduce bird
habitats. Noise and air pollution also disturb birds.
Providing clean water, planting trees, and reducing plastic waste
can help protect birds. People should avoid harming birds and
spreading awareness about bird conservation.
Schools and communities can play an important role by
encouraging bird-friendly practices and protecting natural
habitats.

CONCLUSION & REFERENCE
Conclusion
Birds are essential for maintaining ecological balance. Scavenger
birds keep the environment clean, while pollinator birds help
plants grow and reproduce. Conserving birds is necessary for a
sustainable future.
