Lab# 10: Use of Weldment tab in Solid Work

Objective:
To understand the different commands and tools of a Solid Works Software and
making a 3D object by using these commands.

Apparatus:
1. Computer System 2. Mouse
3. Solid Works Software 4. Key Board

Commands Used:
1. 3D Sketch:

✓ The modeling process began with a 3D Sketch,

where a corner rectangular profile layout was
defined.
✓ This 3D sketch served as the structural skeleton of
the entire frame, allowing members to be oriented
correctly
✓ In three dimensions while maintaining accurate alignment and geometry by
pressing Tab key.

2. Structural Member:

✓ After completing the 3D sketch, the Structural

Member command was applied.
✓ Using this feature, a square tube profile was
selected from the standard weldment.
✓ This command automatically generated the main
beams, columns, and bracing members of the
structure.

3. Boss-Extrude:
✓ To create the base support visible at the bottom of each vertical column, the
Boss-Extrude command was used.
16
✓ This feature was necessary to model the foot plates,
which are not part of standard weldment profiles
✓ Boss-Extrude allowed precise control over plate
thickness, shape, and dimensions, making the
structure suitable for floor mounting and load transfer.

4. End Cap:

✓ Once the structural members were in place, the

End Cap feature was applied.
✓ This command was used to close the open ends of
the square tubes, giving the model a realistic
fabricated appearance.
✓ End caps are important both visually and functionally, as they represent
sealed tube ends commonly require.

5. Gussets:

✓ To improve the structural rigidity of the frame,

Gussets were added at the upper corner joints.
✓ The Gusset command was used to reinforce the
connections between intersecting members,
increasing strength and resistance to
deformation under load.
✓ These gussets also reflect real world fabrication practices where additional
support is required at high-stress joint locations.

Task
Draw the given object in solid works

17
Step 1:
• First, a 3D Sketch was created to define the
overall rectangular frame layout.
• Including the vertical columns, horizontal beams,
and diagonal members.
• This sketch provided the geometric backbone of
the structure and ensured correct positioning and alignment of all components
in three-dimensional space.

Step 2:
• After completing the 3D sketch, the Structural
Member command was applied.
• A square tube profile was selected from the weldment
profile library and assigned to the sketched paths.
• Which converted the sketch into a complete structural
frame with consistent cross-sections and accurate corner treatments.

Step 3:

• The Boss-Extrude feature was used to model the

base plates at the bottom of the vertical members.
• These plates were created separately because they
are not part of standard weldment profiles.
• Boss-Extrude allowed precise control over their thickness and overall
dimensions.

18
Step 3:

• Once the primary structure was generated, the

Gusset feature was used to strengthen the joints.
• Gussets were added at critical upper connections to
improve rigidity and load-carrying capacity.
• Reflecting standard industrial fabrication practices.

Step 4:

• The Weld Bead feature was added to represent the

welded joints between the connected members.
• Both Fillet Welds and Groove Welds were
applied where necessary to accurately depict the
welding process.
• After the weld bead we Mirror the front plane and then right plane the
finished product is ready.

Final Object:

Conclusions:
• Demonstrated effective use of SolidWorks Weldments for designing a realistic,
structurally sound frame.
• Followed a systematic modeling approach: 3D sketch → structural members →
gussets → base plates → end caps → weld beads → mirrored features.
• Communicated manufacturing intent through proper structural detailing and weld
representation.
• Achieved an accurate, industry-oriented model reflecting real-world fabrication
practices.
