PREFACE
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has spread all over the world, this year the “6th International
Agriculture Congress” was held on 16 October 2021 as an e-congress.
The congress was very productive and valuable studies were presented. We believe that
Congress will open new horizons in the field of agriculture and will lead to new collaborations.
We would like to thank the Chair of the Organizing Committee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tanveer
Fatima Miano and members of the Organizing Committee and all academicians who took part
in the scientific board. We are also grateful to all our participants for their support of our
scientific event.
The invited speakers made great contributions to make the congress success. The participants
presented and discussed highly important topics about the latest developments in agricultural
sciences in Turkey and the world. The community of agricultural scientists is working day and
night with their non ending efforts to meet the needs of ever growing world population.
Hopefully the recommendations of the congress will help in contributing to take more positive
steps to the provision of food, clothing and shelter- the basic needs of people. Healthy
communities are promoted by the physical health of its members with security for food,
clothing, and shelter. Healthy behaviors towards the agriculture and agro based industries make
sense in improving the lifestyle of the people. We believe that this congress will be beneficial
in bringing positive improvements in the society and world.

Abstract
Spontaneous mutations have played a considerable role in introducing new cultivars of vegetatively propagated
crops, but their rate in nature is too low to be adequately used. Induced mutations using mutagenic treatments
consequently have a high potential for bringing about further genetic improvements and frequency of somatic
mutation by inducing chromosomal change or by causing rearrangements of cell layers in the shoot apical
meristem. The main advantage of the mutation breeding method in fruit tree cultivars is the ability to change one
or a few characters of an outstanding cultivar without affecting the remaining traits, thus mutation breeding has
played an important role in developing new varieties in fruit trees. The application of mutation techniques, i.e.
Thermal neutrons, X irradiation, Gamma-rays, and other chemical mutagens, has generated a vast amount of
genetic variability and has played a significant role in plant breeding and genetic studies in fruit tree breeding
programs, however most convenient, useful and successful in the release of the best mutant cultivars so far have
been obtained by using Gamma-rays. Comparing the experience of chronic irradiation with that obtained by acute
irradiation showed that a more effective and easy method followed in mutation breeding of fruit trees has been
acute irradiation of cutting or buds (meristematic multicellular). Mutations goals in the fruit trees breeding program
were divided into 5 main classes concerning tree growth, fruit quantity, Fruit quality, tolerance to biotic and abiotic
stress. The last few decades have also seen introduce of several mutant cultivars of fruit trees including, apple,
citrus, sweet cherry, sour cherry, grape, peach, papaya, pear, and banana already widely used in the commercial
breeding of ornamental plants. success mutations for improving fruit tree breeding depend on the number of plant
materials, type of plant material, easily identifiable traits, a frequent presence in the orchard, cultural practices
(pruning), and frequency of mutations per clone.
Keywords: mutant; Gamma-rays; plant growth; acute irradiation, success mutations.
