Reproduction

Reproduction is the biological process by which organisms produce new individuals, ensuring species survival through genetic information transfer. It occurs in two main types: sexual reproduction, involving two parents and resulting in genetically diverse offspring, and asexual reproduction, requiring only one parent and producing identical offspring. Both plants and animals utilize these methods, with specific processes and examples outlined for each type of reproduction.

REPRODUCTION?
REPRODUCTION?
Reproduction is the biological
process by which living organisms
produce new individuals of the
same species. It ensures the
survival of a species by passing on
genetic information from parents
to offspring.
There are two main types of
reproduction:

Sexual reproduction

Asexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction is a type of
reproduction that involves two
parents and results in offspring
that are genetically different from
either parent. This happens
because the offspring inherit a
mix of genes from both parents.
Asexual reproduction is a type of
reproduction in which only one
parent is needed to produce
offspring. The offspring are
genetically identical to the parent,
meaning they are exact copies.

Plants
Reproduction in plants is the
process by which plants produce
new plants of the same kind. Plants
can reproduce in two main ways:
asexual reproduction and sexual
reproduction.
Asexual Reproduction in Plants
This type of reproduction
involves only one parent and
no seeds are formed. The new
plants are genetically identical
to the parent.
Types of asexual reproduction:
1. Vegetative propagation- New plants
grow from parts like roots, stems, or
leaves.

Examples:
Potato(tuber)
Onion (bulb)
Strawberry (runner)
2. Budding - A small bud grows
into a new plant.
3. Spore formation - Plants like
ferns and mosses produce
spores.
Sexual Reproduction in Plants
This type of reproduction involves
two parents and leads to the
formation of seeds. It usually
happens in flowering plants.
Steps in sexual reproduction:
Pollination - Transfer of pollen
from the anther (male part) to the
stigma (female part)

Fertilization - Male gamete joins

the female gamete (ovule)
Seed formation - The fertilized
ovule becomes a seed.

Fruit formation - The ovary

develops into a fruit.

Germination - The seed grows into

a new plant.

Animals
Reproduction in animals is the
process by which animals
produce new individuals of the
same species. Animals mainly
reproduce through sexual
reproduction, but some can also
reproduce asexually.
Asexual Reproduction in Animals
This involves only one parent
and no fusion of gametes. The
offspring are genetically
identical to the parent.
Types of asexual reproduction:
Binary fission - One organism splits into
two.
Budding - A new individual grows from the
parent's body.

Example: Hydra
Fragmentation - Body breaks into parts;
each part grows into a new animal.

Example: Starfish
Sexual Reproduction in Animals
This involves two parents
(male and female) and the
fusion of gametes (sperm
and egg).
Steps in sexual reproduction:

Gamete formation - Males

produce sperm; females produce
eggs.
Fertilization - Sperm fuses
with egg.
Internal fertilization (inside the
body): humans, birds

External fertilization (outside the

body): fish, frogs
Development - The fertilized
egg (zygote) develops into an
embryo.

Birth or hatching - Young

animal is born or hatches from
an egg.
Modes of development:
Oviparous - Animals lay eggs (birds,
reptiles)

Viviparous - Animals give birth to live

young (mammals)

Ovoviviparous - Eggs develop inside

the mother (some sharks)
