Leadership Styles for Success

This document discusses situational leadership, which involves adapting one's leadership style to fit the situation. There are four basic leadership styles - directing, supporting, coaching, and delegating - which combine different levels of directive and supportive behavior. An effective leader diagnoses an individual's competence and commitment levels to determine which style is appropriate. A situational leader also partners with individuals, adapting their style as the person's skills develop. The goal is to help every person reach their potential and perform at a high level.

Success

Success does not achieved by working hard Their no direct relationship between amount of work and success

For many of the people organization is like a pyramid with CEO at top & all other contributors at bottom

Work of manager is not to do all work ourselves or to sit back but to help them according to their needs

Leadership styles
Leadership style is the way coach or work with someone.

DIFFERENT STROKE FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS

A person who change his/her leadership style according to situation that person known as situational leader To become situational leader we have to develop three skills Flexibility Diagnosis Partnering

Flexibility
There are 4 basic leadership style Directing Supporting Coaching Delegating

These 4 style consist of different combination of two leadership behaviour Directive behaviourit come with words structure, organize, teach and support Supportive behaviourpraise, listen, ask, explain and facilitate In directive behaviour you tell the person what goal is and what a good job look like, you layout step by step plan about how task is to accomplish In supportive behaviour you support your people efforts to their suggestion & facilitate their interaction with others

Example

Some noise in outside office that was bothering you It can be control by 4 style: Style 1---Directing Style 3---Coaching Style 2---Supporting (directing+coaching) Style 4---Delegating

Leadership Styles used for peoples

Directing style is appropriate when a decision has to be made quickly .It is also appropriate for inexperienced people .It is also appropriate for someone who has some skills but doesnt know the company and its policies Some people have lack of commitment towards their work they do it for money it happens because when they are giving good performance manager dont say anything and when they make mistake everyone notice it for those disillusioned learner we have to use coaching style Experienced people need supporting style they have lot of ideas with them and dont have much faith in their ideas they need recognition Delegating is appropriate for people who are self-reliant achievers who dont need much direction they are top performers dont need much supervision

Diagnosing
To determine a person performance there are two factor:

Competence Commitment
There is 4 development level D1LOW COMPETENCE, HIGH COMMITMENT D2SOME TO LOW COMPETENCE, LOW COMMITMENT

D3-MODERATE TO HIGH COMPETENCE, VARIABLE COMMITMENT

D4HIGH COMPETENCE , HIGH COMMITMENT

Some people are more developed in some area of their job and need no supervision but need support & direction on other task

DIFFERENT STROKE FOR SAME FOLKS Example:-

child is good in reading development level d4 need a teaching of delegating style

same child bad in maths development level d2 need a teaching of coaching style

Performance curve

As development level changes manager have to change his leadership style with it.

DEVELOPMENT OF COMPETENCE AND COMMITMENT

There are 5 steps: To tell them what to do To show them what to do Let them try Observing performance Praise progress Manager main task is to change leadership style until people can perform their job well on their work is done so there is a saying

WHEN THE BEST LEADER WORK IS DONE .THE PEOPLE SAY WE DID IT OURSELVES

PARTNERING
If we know development level of two person one is D4 and other is D1 We use delegating style with D4 and directing style with D1 If we dont spend time with D1 person but spend all time with D4 person then D4 person think that you didnt care for him and he fell ignored and unappreciated and D1 person think that you didnt trust on him SOLUTION IS THAT We have to sat down with both and tell D4 that you dont need much supervision and to D2 that you need supervision THEN D4 think that he compliment my skill and D1 think that you closely supervising him

SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP IS NOT SOMETHING YOU DO TO PEOPLE BUT SOMETHING YOU DO WITH PEOPLE

POSITIVE ASSUMPTION ABOUT PEOPLE

When we uses directive style We probably think that people are lazy, unreliable and irresponsible we have to remain positive in our assumption we dont think that person isnt good but on contrary we have to think that person has the potential to be a high performer but lack experience that person need direction EVERYONE IS A POTENTIAL HIGH PERFORMER SOME PEOPLE JUST NEED A LIITTLE HELP ALONG THE WAY
