Natural Resource Management Overview

This document summarizes different types of resources including natural resources, human resources, and capital/manmade resources. It discusses natural resources being divided into renewable resources like sunlight and wind, and non-renewable resources like fossil fuels. Human resources refer to people in the workforce. Manmade resources are created by humans to utilize natural resources and can include medicines. The document also discusses the exploitation of resources, technology's impact on the environment, wealth, the difference between wealth and resources, optimizing resource conversion into wealth, anthropogenic waste and its effects, and industrial waste.

Resource
A resource is a source or supply from which benefit is
produced. Typically resources are materials, energy,
services, staff, knowledge, or other assets that are
transformed to produce benefit and in the process may
be consumed or made unavailable.
Benefits of resource utilization may include increased
wealth, meeting needs or wants, proper functioning of a
system, or enhanced well being.
From a human perspective a natural resource is
anything obtained from the environment to satisfy
human needs and wants.[1] From a broader biological or
ecological perspective a resource satisfies the needs of
a living organism
Types of resources
Natural resources
Human resources
Capital or manmade rsources
Natural resources
Natural resources are resources that exist without
actions of humankind.
This includes all valued characteristics such as magnetic,
gravitational, and electrical properties and forces. On earth
it includes; sunlight, atmosphere, water, land (includes all
minerals) along with all vegetation and animal life that
naturally subsists upon.
Every man-made product is composed of natural resources.
A natural resource may exist as a separate entity such as
fresh water, and air, as well as a living organism such as a
fish, or it may exist in an alternate form which must be
processed to obtain the resource such as metal ores,
petroleum, and most forms of energy.
Natural resources can be classified into-
1. Renewable resources: Renewable resources can
be reproduced or replaced easily. Many renewable
resouces can be depleted by human use, but are
replaced and the balance is maintained. Eg.
Sunlight, wind, etc.
2. Non-renewable resources: Non-renewable
resources are formed over a long geological
period of time. As the rate of formation is
extremely slow, they cannot be replenished once
depleted. Eg. Fossil fuels, metallic minerals , etc
Human resources
Human beings are also considered a
resources because of its ability to change
the gifts of nature into valuable resources.
They are considered a special resource,
education and health help in making them
a valuable resource.
Human resources are the people who make up
the workforce of an organization, business sector
, or economy.
"Human capital" is sometimes used
synonymously with "human resources"
Manmade resources
Man-made resources are resources that are created
by humans to transform and use the gifts of nature.
Sometimes resources become useful to man only
when their original form is changed.
Some man-made resources are nearly essential to
modern human life, such as medicines. Without
medicines, vaccines and similar man-made
chemicals, many people would become sick and die.
Others are not essential, and only exist because
people want them. For example, many pesticides
are man-made resources, and while not essential,
their use enhances the lives of many people.
Exploitation of resources
The exploitation of resources is the use
of resources for economic growth,[1]
sometimes with a negative connotation of
accompanying environmental degradation.
As the world population rises and
economic growth occurs, the
depletion of natural resources influenced
by the unsustainable extraction of
raw materials becomes an increasing
concern.
Technology
Technology negatively affects the environment by
compromising human health and safety, endangering
natural ecosystems and biodiversity, having a
cumulative impact on global systems, and depleting
natural resources. Eg: inhalation of dangerous
chemicals in air pollution, contamination of water and
food sources, etc.
Technology positively affects the environment through
the application of environmental science to solve
problems caused by human environmental impact. Eg:
recycling, the exploitation of renewable-energy sources
such as solar power and wind power, the purification of
polluted air and water, etc.
Wealth
Wealth is the abundance of valuable
resources or valuable material
possessions.
An individual, community, region or
country that possesses an
abundance of such possessions or
resources to the benefit of the
common good is known as wealthy.
Difference between wealth &
resources
Wealth and resource are two
completely different terms.
Wealth is what we desire goods and
service. Also wealth is what we own,
whereas resources is what is already
available in the environment free of
cost.
Optimum conversion of resources
into wealth
Individuals cannot directly consume commodity
wealth. Gold, oil, iron ore , and the like provide
no nutrition or protection from the elements.
If trade is possible with another nation -- a
nation that realizes that the true measure of
wealth is in production of necessary goods and
services, then these commodities do have
value.
The ability to efficiently transform resources
(factor inputs) into desired goods and services
represents the true source of a nation's wealth.
Anthropegenic Waste - its
effects,
Human impact on the environment or
anthropogenic impact on the environment
includes impacts on biophysical environments,
biodiversity, and other resources.
The term anthropogenic designates an effect or
object resulting from human activity.
The term is sometimes used in the context of
pollution emissions that are produced as a result
of human activities but applies broadly to all
major human impacts on the environment.[5]
Man made industrial waste
Industrial waste is the waste produced by industrial activity
which includes any material that is rendered useless during a
manufacturing process such as that of factories, industries,
mills, and mining operations.
It has existed since the start of the Industrial Revolution.[1] Some
examples of industrial wastes are chemical solvents, paints,
sandpaper, paper products, industrial by-products, metals, and
radioactive wastes.
Toxic waste, chemical waste, industrial solid waste and
municipal solid waste are designations of industrial wastes.
Sewage treatment plants can treat some industrial wastes, i.e.
those consisting of conventional pollutants such as
biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Industrial wastes containing
toxic pollutants require specialized treatment systems.
