“Attitudes”
▪ Persistent tendency to feel and behave in a particular way towards
some object.
▪ Important psychological attribute of individuals which shape their
behaviour.
▪ Way the person feels about something – a person, a place, a
commodity, a situation or an idea.
▪ When you say “I like my job” or “I hate beggars” they represent your
attitude towards job/ beggars.
Attitudes

▪ Attitudes are formed over the years by various means, Starts from
childhood and continues lifelong. Parents have great impact on
attitude of child.
▪ For instance a person may have positive and negative attitudes
towards religion, politics, politicians or countries.
▪ Our attitude might be based on the truth, or what we might
consider to be the truth
▪ It is possible for people to change their attitude. For that, one
would need to change the way he/she thinks, feels, or behaves.

Components of attitudes

▪ The three main components of the attitudes :


▪ Cognitive component : this involves a person’s belief/
knowledge about an object. For example : “ My Pay is very
low”.
▪ Affective component : this involves a person’s emotions/
feelings about the object. For example : “ I am angry over how
little I’m paid”.
▪ Behavioural component : the intention to behave in a certain
way towards object. For example : “I am going to look for
another job that pays better”.
▪ Cognition, affect and behaviour are closely related.

▪ Positive attitude : Individuals who have a positive


attitude will pay attention to the good, rather than
bad in people, situations, events etc.,
▪ Confidence, Optimism, Sincerity and Reliability are
traits that represent positive attitude.
▪ Negative attitude : People with a negative attitude
ignore the good, and pay attention to the bad in
people, situations, events etc.,
▪ Hatred, Pessimism, Resentment and Doubt are
traits that represent negative attitude

▪ Neutral attitude : People with a neutral attitude


don't give enough importance to situations or
events.
▪ Unemotional, Detachment, Indifference are traits
that represent neutral attitude.
Job related attitudes

▪ Job-related attitudes are positive or negative evaluations held by


employees about various aspects of their work environment.
▪ Three important attitudes concerned with job :
▪ Job satisfaction
▪ Job involvement
▪ Organizational commitment
Job related attitudes

▪ Job satisfaction
▪ A collection of positive or negative feelings that an individual holds
toward his job.
▪ A person with a high level of job satisfaction holds positive feelings about
his job and is opposite with a person of low level of job satisfaction.
▪ Job Satisfaction refers to the emotional state of the worker about specific
job factors.
▪ Job factors like mentally challenging work, equitable rewards and pay
system, understanding and friendly supervisor, supportive colleagues,
comfortable working conditions etc. lead to favourable evaluation of the
job

▪ Job satisfaction improves productivity of individuals.


▪ Dissatisfaction results in absenteeism, low productivity and complaints.
▪ Job involvement
▪ It is the psychological and emotional extent to which someone
participates in his/ her work, profession and company.
▪ Job involvement reduces absenteeism and employee turnover
Job related attitudes

▪ Organizational Commitment
▪ Identifying with a particular organization and its goals, and wishing to
maintain membership in the organization.
▪ The more committed they are towards the organization’s goal the less is
the likelihood of leaving the organization
