Understanding Virtual Reality: Types & Uses

Virtual reality is a computer-generated simulation of an environment that users can interact with. It involves immersive, non-immersive, and window-on-world types. Immersive VR fully surrounds the user, while non-immersive uses large displays but not full surround. Window-on-world displays 3D VR on regular screens. VR has applications in military, healthcare, education, science, and entertainment by creating realistic worlds to explore and experiment in. Advantages include realistic experiences and enabling exploration, but disadvantages are the expense and complexity of the required equipment and inability to fully move freely like in the real world.

Immersive virtual reality
Immersion into virtual reality is a perception of being physically present in a non-
physical world.

Elements of virtual environment that increase the immersiveness of the experience –

1. Continuity of surroundings
2. Conformance of human vision
3. Freedom of movement
4. Physical interaction
5. physical feedback
Non-Immersive Virtual Reality

 Large display, but doesn’t surround the user.

Window on world Virtual Reality
 Desktop based Virtual reality involves displaying a 3-D virtual on
regular desktop display without use of any specialized movement
tracking environment.
Application of Virtual reality

1. Virtual reality in military.

2. virtual reality in healthcare.
3. Virtual reality in education.
4. Virtual reality in scientific visualization.
