THE EVOLUTION OF CSR
 The concept of corporate social responsibility is not
brand new; however it has evolved considerably in the
last few decades since the phrase “Corporate Social
Responsibility” was coined in 1953 with the
publication of ‘Social Responsibility of Businessmen’
by Howard R. Bowen.
 The phrase has been in wide use since the 1960’s and
through the 70’s and 80’ discussion of the concept
grew. Around the same time, big international
companies also faced anti-corporate sentiments
because of environmental and human rights issues. In
fact, companies faced large scale boycotts of their
goods and services to force change.
 Though initially CSR was seen as the moral
responsibility of corporate managers, it is now
increasingly being accepted as being in the long
term interest of corporations.

Organizations as well as consumers are

recognizing that companies have a responsibility
not only to their shareholders, but also to
stakeholders including their employees,
consumers, suppliers, communities, legislators and
the environment.
CSR now represents an organizations
contribution to these stakeholders, the society at
large and increasingly the global society in which
they operate.
CSR IN INDIA
In India, CSR has evolved to surround employees,
customers, stakeholders & sustainable
development or corporate citizenship.
The spectrum of CSR includes a number of areas
as human rights, safety at work, consumer
protection, climate protection & caring for the
environment & sustainable management of natural
resources.
From the perspective of the employees, CSR
activities include providing health & safety
measures, preserving employee rights &
discouraging discrimination at workplace.
This helps in fostering a healthy environment
within the company.
EXAMPLE OF CSR
After 1945, TATA implemented social welfare
provisions for its employees that have since become
the legislative norm, from the perspectives of
customers, Csr activities may include commitment
to product quality, fair pricing policies & so on..
Promoting road safety is something MARUTI
believes is part of its responsibility for enabling
people to make optimum use of automobiles. The
