WHAT IS LEARNER-CENTERED
TEACHING?
•Inverting the traditional Teacher-Centered Teaching.
•Understanding of the learning process and outing students at
the center of the learning process.
•Shift the focus or the activity from the teachers to the
learners.
•Emphasizes what the learners do and NOT what the teachers
does.
•Focuses on skills and practices in a lifelong learning, creative
thinking and independent problem-solving.
•Insist the learners to actively construct their own knowledge.
The concepts of learner-centered teaching can be summed up in the
acronym I CARED.

WHY IMPLEMENT LEARNER-
CENTERED TEACHING?

• Research shows that learner-centered


teaching leads to:

o Increased student engagement with the


content.
o Increased student learning and long-term
retention.
THE ROLE OF THE
TEACHER
• The teacher creates an environment that:
o Fosters student learning.
o Accommodates different learning styles.
o Motivates students to accept responsibility for learning.
o Utilizes multiple teaching techniques appropriate for
student learning goals.
o Designs activities in which students interact with the
material, the teacher, and each other.
o Inspires and encourages student ownership of learning.
THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR
LEARNING
• Responsibility is shared between the teacher and the
student.
• Students develop learning skills for further learning.
• Students become self-directed lifelong leaners.
• Students can and do assess their own learning.
• Students become proficient at self-assessment.
• Students become proficient with all information literacy
skills (e.g., accessing and evaluating sources, using
information legally).
