Overview of Haptic Technology

Haptic technology adds the sense of touch to interactions with virtual objects by applying forces, vibrations or motions. It originated from research into human touch perception and has applications in fields like education, arts, medicine and military training by simulating real-life haptic sensations. Common haptic devices include gloves, exoskeletons and force feedback devices. While it increases realism, haptics also has limitations in precision and range of forces compared to real touch.

First of all , What is Haptics?
INTRODUCTION
 ‘Haptics’ is derived from the Greek word ‘haptikos’ which means –”being able to come into
contact with”

 Haptic, is the technology of adding the sensation of touch an feeling to computers

 Haptic technology is a tactile feedback technology which takes advantage of the sense of
touch by applying forces, vibrations or motions to the user.

 A Haptic device gives people a sense of touch with computer-generated environment, so that
when virtual objects are touched , they seem real and tangible
HISTORY
• Scientist used term ‘haptics’ to label the subfield of their studies that addressed human touch-
based perception and manipulation.
• In 70’s and 80’s research efforts in a completely different field, robotics also began to focused
on manipulation and perception by touch building a dexterous robotic hand.
• In the early 1990s a new usage of the word haptics began to emerge.
• The confluence of several emerging technologies made virtualized haptics , or computer haptics
possible
WORKING
HAPTICS FEEDBACK
Haptics is implemented through different types of interactions with haptic devices
communicating with the computer . These interactions can be categorized into the
different types of touch sensations as user can receive:

• Tactile Feedback
refers to the sensations felt by the skin . It allows the user to find
things such ass the texture of surfaces ,temperature and vibrations.
• Force feedback
it reproduces the directional forces that can result from solid
boundaries . Example : weight of virtual object , inertia etc
TYPES OF HAPTIC DEVICES
1. VIRTUAL REALITY DEVICES
 Exoskeleton and stationary device

 Gloves and Wearable devices

 Point source and specific task devices

 Locomotion interfaces

grasp computer-generated objects.
APPLICATIONS OF HAPTIC TECHNOLOGY

Education and training: surgical training , pilot training.

Arts and creation: artists and musicians, virtual exhibitions of paintings and
sculptures.
Military applications: flight simulators , accurate simulation of real events in a safe ,
controlled environment.
 It is also used in the fields of Biomechanics , Neuroscience, Psychophysics , Medical
, Software , gaming etc

MILITARY TRAINING WITH HAPTIC DEVICES
advantages
• Communication is centered through touch and the digital world can behave like the
real world.
• Increase confidence in medical field.
• With haptic hardware and software designer can feel the result as if he were
handling physical objects.
DISADVANTAGES
• Haptic interfaces can only exert forces with limited magnitude and not equally well in all
direction.

• Haptic device position sensors have finite resolution.

• The precision of touch require a lots of advance design.

CONCLUSION
• Continued implementation of tactile devices to aid people with
disabilities will advanced further.
• Future generations of mobile devices and game console accessories
will implement more haptic feedback.
• Still embroyonic when compared to full fledged VR simulations
