What is hair?
Hair is an external extension of the skin that grows from hair follicles. It consists of a root, shaft, and tip. In
humans, the diameter of an individual hair shaft varies from 15 to 120 micrometers, depending on the type of
hair and the region of the body where the follicle is located.
Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a cystine-containing protein that belongs to a family of sulfur-rich
proteins.
Structure of hair
Each hair shaft is composed of three distinct types of cells: an outer cuticle that
encloses a central cortex, which may, in turn, contain a central medulla. The
cuticle serves as the outer protective layer of the hair shaft, consisting of keratin
scales that form a specific protein structure. Each cuticle cell is approximately 0.5
to 1 micrometer thick and around 45 micrometers long. A typical human hair
consists of six to eight layers of cuticle, which anchor the hair shaft within the
follicle and safeguard the inner fibers. [2]
Various type of hair disease can be broadly categorized into
those causing hair loss, infections, and other hair shaft
abnormalities.
HAIR MASK
A hair mask is a deep conditioning treatment that provides intense hydration &
nourishment to the hair, often containing more concentrated ingredients that a regular
conditioner.
A substance that is put on hair, left for some time and then washed off, in order to make
the hair look and feel better, so in this case use a hair mask to give your hair unbeatable shine.
A hair mask is intense nourishing treatment to help strengthen, hydrate, de-frizz and
restore dry, damaged, processed or curly hair to healthy bounce and shine. Masque is an
alternate spelling for some hair mask treatment- unless you’re referring to an Elizabethan
courtly drama called a masque. [3]
It provides hydration, smoothing, strengthening, curl definition, heat protection, damage
repair.
In the formulation of hair mask we can use different type of
ingredients and in these we can use natural ingredients like eggs,
yogurt, aloe vera, banana, avocado and almond oil.
Classification of hair mask:-
hair masks are broadly classified by their
primary function and the type of hair they are designed for.
1. By hair type: in this type hair mask is use for fine hair, curly hair, thick
hair, dry hair and colour treated hair.
2. By hair concern: in this it can be used for frizzy hair, hair fall and
dandruff.
3. By ingredients: like hydrating, repairing, strengthening and smoothing
masks. [5]
Review on literature
THE REVIEW ON HERBAL HAIR MASK FOR THE PREVENTION OF DANDRUFF in WORLD JOURNAL OF
PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH27 by Poornima Mishra and *Shashikant Maury in march 2022 in that article we find that
hair is an important part of the body, it is the health indicator. Hair mask can help moisturize our hairs. They especially beneficial
for dry or damaged hairs. Hair mask may improve the health of our scalp and boost the strength of our hairs. These hair masks are
also made at home, it has no disadvantages, and it is very beneficial.
Physiology and anatomy of hair in drug abusing cases in journal of medical toxicology and forensic medicine by Kumar s1,
Wahid a1, Anoop kv2international in 30 November 2012 in that we observe hair is an external appendage of skin that grows
from hair follicles. It has a root, shaft, and a tip. In man, the diameter of individual hair shaft may range from 15 to 120
micrometer depending upon the type of hair and the region of the body the follicle is located. Hair contains a family of Sulphur
rich proteins and is basically made up of cystine containing protein called keratin. In the hair shaft, keratin forms long fibers
which become bound together very tightly through the replacement of SH groups with S-S bonds and through chemical cross-
linking with other proteins.
Procedure & methodology
Step-1 For Water Phase
A weight the required amount of polyethylene glycol of 1.8 gm and
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose of 1.2 gm and dissolved in required ml of
water until it can completely dissolved
Step-2 we took 1.2 gm of Cetrimonium chloride and 1.8 gm of
Behentrimonium chloride with remaining ml of water at 70 ⁰C at constant
temperature until it make smooth cream like consistency

Mix 2.21 gm of beeswax and 0.9 gm of olive oil in another beaker and added
1 Polyvinyl pyrrolidone Film Former 1.5 gm
preservative 0.6 gm of methyl paraben
2 Hydroxypropyl Thickening agent 1.2 gm

travelled by the upper slide, and t is the time it takes to separate the slides.[M 12][10]
RESULT & DISCUSSION
The formulation and evaluation of the hair mask were conducted through three different trials (T1, T2, and T3)
with varying concentrations of key excipients to optimize the consistency, conditioning effect, and overall
performance of the product. The optimized formulation was Trial 3 (T3), as it demonstrated the most desirable
organoleptic and functional characteristics.
Test Observation
Organoleptic test Appearance – white and off white
Smell – slightly aromatic
Texture – creamy and thick
Physiochemical PH – 4.5–5.5
Washability – easily wash
Biological test Non Irritation on skin after apply
Don’t produce swelling
Other test Foam test have done successfully
Conclusion
The present study focused on the formulation and evaluation of a hair mask using natural and safe ingredients
aimed at improving hair health and addressing common hair issues. Among the three trials conducted, Trial 3 (T3)
was found to be the most effective formulation, offering a smooth, creamy consistency, good spreadability,
hydration, and conditioning effects without causing any irritation.
† Hair mask is a versatile hair care product which apply on dry
or wet hair for various purpose like shining, nourishments,
reduced hair breakage and damage.
⁖ Hair masks work by penetrating deeper into the hair shaft
than regular conditioners, delivering essential nutrients and
hydration to repair internal damage and promote overall hair
health.
